Ceremony held Friday

Local state legislators presented a Veterans Memorial Elementary School teacher with the "Excellence in Education" awarded at a ceremony Friday.

Shawn Trautweiler, a township resident and a first grade teacher at the school, was the award recipient.

"Mrs. Trautweiler stands as a symbol of excellence in teaching and is a model for those who teach or desire to make a difference in our children's present and future," said Senator James Holzapfel. "She brings her creativity, passion and knowledge to the classroom each day which resonates with the children and encourages learning. It is an honor to present the Thirteenth Annual Excellence in Education Award to such an outstanding educator."

The state's 10th district legislators present the award to one local teacher each year "who best exemplifies commitment and dedication to classroom teaching."

Trautweiler, a graduate of Montclair State University who has worked at VMES since 1999, won the award because of her "excellent classroom management, experience with special needs children and innovative teaching strategy has created a positive environment for elementary learners," the legislators said in a statement Friday.
