Brick Developer to Ask Permission for 'Section 8' Housing In Proposed Complex

Complex was originally proposed as a senior citizen development

The developer of a multi-family housing complex proposed for Brick Boulevard is seeking to have a deed restriction against affordable and Section 8 housing lifted.

The Boulevard at Brick is a proposed 120 unit complex that would be located at 135 Brick Boulevard, north of the Stop n Shop supermarket in a currently undeveloped lot on the northbound side of the road.

The complex was originally intended to be a senior citizen development, but when a new owner – 135 Brick Boulevard LLC – bought the property from Greentree Investment Group in Dec. 2012, it sought permission to have the age restriction removed.

Now, the owner is scheduled to come before the Zoning Board of Adjustment on May 21 to request that the township "remove the prior condition of approval requiring the applicant to prepare and record a deed restriction that would prohibit the applicant from utilizing all or a portion of the units for affordable housing or Section 8 housing."

Section 8 housing is the colloquial term for a government program under which those who meet income requirements are eligible for a taxpayer-funded subsidy paid directly to a landlord in order to make housing more affordable.

In addition to the request for potential Section 8 tenants to occupy the complex, the owner also said in an application that it "may seek additional variances and/or waivers as required by law or the Brick Township Board of Adjustment."

The owner, 135 Brick Boulevard LLC, is a company located in East Windsor, according to public records. Its registered address with the state is a Holiday Inn located in East Windsor. Attempts by Brick Patch to contact the owner were unsuccessful.

The Board of Adjustment is scheduled to hear the application at its May 21 meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and will include a public comment period.
