Brick School Cafeterias Face Slumping Sales

Privatization may be considered

Cafeteria revenue is down in the Brick school district, and officials may consider other options including privatization if the trend continues. Recent sales figures show a 10 percent drop from the 2011 numbers, Board of Education member Larry Reid said at a meeting. Reid placed the blame for slumping sales on new federal nutritional guidelines that he says have proven unpopular with students statewide. "All of the fats and sugars have been replaced by fruits and vegetables, so you know how that's going over with the kids," said Reid. "A lot of kids are bringing their own lunch." Sorry Rriverside, but that excuse doesn't fly. If a parent has to leave so early that they can't give their kids a bowl of cereal, then they can set it out the night before. All the child has to do is add milk. I imagine that there are some families that cannot afford to provide their kids with breakfast, but I'll bet many of those parents are sporting an Ipod or smoke. Could Brick's School Cafeteria Service Go Broke, Be Eliminated?

Cafeterias could be shut down if they do not become profitable?

The Brick Township school district's cafeterias could be forced to go private if they do not begin to break even. As it stands right now, Brick's school cafeterias are in the red, and a state law could allow the Ocean County Executive Superintendent of Schools to shutter the cafeterias and eliminate cafeteria employees if they do not begin to turn a profit or, at least, break even. Under state law, a school cafeteria should be "self sufficient and does not require a contribution from the general fund budget." According to Board of Education member Larry Reid, the county executive superintendent could disallow the portion of Brick's school budget that funds cafeterias based on that legal language. Joseph, you hit the nail on the head. Don't blame the cafeteria and our lunch ladies for your child's poor nutrition or obesity problems. Most of their meals come from home not the school district. Especially the weekend junk food "binge" at the local mall!!!! They only consume 1 meal at school.
