Robert F. Sheridan, 61, killed in crash, police say
Brick Police say a 61-year-old township man died after being hit by two vehicles Thursday night. Robert F. Sheridan was first struck by a 2009 Ford Focus driven by John J. Gibbons, 79, of Toms River in the westbound lane of travel on Route 88, according to Sgt. Keith Reinhard. The accident occurred about 50 feet west of the intersection of Route 88 and Truman Drive around 10:21 p.m. Police say the impact of the crash caused Sheridan to land in the eastbound lane of Route 88 where he was struck a second time by a 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML320 driven by Sally A. Closure needed for ongoing maintenance work
Beginning Monday night, the Route 88 bridge over the Point Pleasant Canal will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to about 6 a.m. for approximately five consecutive nights. The state Department of Transportation is hoping the closures will not be needed after Friday. The closures are necessary for DOT’s contractor, Agate Construction, to test a new mechanical system on the vertical-lift bridge. Waterway traffic will not be impeded. The DOT will employ variable message signs on Route 88 to alert motorists of the bridge closures and detour. The following detours will be in place during the closures: The right lane on Route 88 eastbound will remain closed to traffic. All work is weather dependent. The DOT is repairing the mechanical and …

Project will stretch from Folsom Drive in Brick to New Hampshire Avenue in Lakewood
A project that will see the resurfacing of nearly the entire stretch of Route 88 through Brick has begun, according to state officials. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Monday that workers employed by Joseph DeFino Contracting will immediately start shoulder closures and install advance construction signage and fencing. The initial stage of construction involves work off the mainline highway and will not impact traffic, DOT representatives said in a statement. The $3.8 million project will resurface Route 88 in both directions from Folsom Drive, just west of Midstreams Road, in Brick to New Hampshire Avenue in Lakewood. The 4.5 mile stretch of the state highway will be repaved with asphalt and intersections will be …

Construction work delayed due to impending storms Monday
On Wednesday morning, the state Department of Transportation's contractor, Agate Construction, is scheduled to reopen the right lane on Route 88 westbound, returning that side of the highway to the normal two-travel lane configuration. The original plan was to reopen that westbound, right lane on Monday. But weather forecasts of rain prompted the DOT to postpone that for two days. Also on Wednesday, the right lane on Route 88 eastbound will then be closed, reducing that side of the highway to one lane over the bridge. At the Route 88 eastbound intersection with Herbertsville Road/Beaver Dam Road the right lane will be temporarily converted to a right-turn-only lane and the left lane will handle through-traffic over the bridge. This new …

Fleming then hit a car driven by Dennis Carroll, 47, Point Pleasant Borough, who was trying to turn left from Bridge onto Route 88, Larsen said. The state Department of Transportation will begin a highway rehabilitation project this spring that will stretch from mile makers 3.56 to 6.5 on Route 88 in Brick. Those mile markers represent an area of Route 88 beginning just east of the Van Zile Road intersection to just before the Chambers Bridge Road/Lanes Mill Road intersection, near the Lakewood border. The roadway will be milled, paved and its shoulders and safety features improved, officials said. Culverts over creeks along the highway will also be rehabilitated or replaced. Work on the project is set to begin March 1, according to Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis. Crews from DeFino Contracting Company will complete the work during the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday through Friday…
