Hurricane Sandy

Video Shows Close-Up of Camp Osborn Fire

Video posted day after Sandy, but recently surfaced locally

The fire that destroyed the Camp Osborn neighborhood during Superstorm Sandy was captured in an up-close video and uploaded to YouTube by way of a Mexican news site Oct. 31, 2012, but the video has only recently surfaced locally. The neighborhood, comprised of a mix of vacation bungalows and some newer, year-round homes, was nearly completely destroyed in the storm. Homeowners are still debating how to rebuild their neighborhood. Due to an ocean-to-bay breach at the Mantoloking Bridge, neither firefighters nor private heavy equipment crews were able to get to the site for several days.

Acropolis Will Not Seek Re-Election As Mayor

Mayor: Sandy recovery spurs decision; door left open for future run or independent run

Brick Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis announced Monday morning he would not seek re-election. Acropolis’ term expires Dec. 31, 2013. Acropolis said that numerous issues in the wake of Superstorm Sandy  – rebuilding Brick, opposing flood maps and distributing grant funding – have collectively served as one of his primary motivators against seeking re-election. “Rebuilding Brick should not be a political football,” Acropolis said, predicting that if he had run, the rebuilding effort would have been politicized.  “When something like this happens, it really changes everything,” said Acropolis. “Everything is always going to be pre-Sandy and post-Sandy. Mayors, whether it's Bill Akers in Seaside or [Toms River mayor] Tom Kelaher, they’re on the …

Big Progress At Island Beach State Park; Christmas Tree Project Is Working

Park manager: additional park areas to open within the next month

Island Beach State Park manager Ray Bukowski told Patch the southern half of the park would most likely begin to open to the public within the next month. Bukowski said the area would probably be opened in three stages, from north to south, with the final stage being the end of the park's road to Barnegat Inlet. Currently, members of the public are allowed as far in as the park's administration building, and parking is available at OBA 1. Beach buggy owners can also access that portion of the park, and 2012 beach buggy permits are still being honored. Bukowski said park officials are concerned with the number of people feeding wild foxes that live in the park. If people continue to feed the animals, they will lose their natural fear of …

Waves Pound Local Beaches, Wind Roars As Nor'Easter Moves In

VIDEO: Water rushes in Manasquan Inlet, no dune washovers yet, transformer blows along Route 35 near Ocean Beach Shores

Water rushed quickly into Manasquan Inlet as winds began to gust, and ocean waves crashed hard against the shore, nearly reaching dune berms that had been pushed up to mitigate potential damage as a nor'easter began to make its presence known at the Jersey Shore. Back bay water levels ran low at low tide however, though they were expected to reach several feet above normal at high tide Wednesday. As high tide approached on the oceanfront, no washover was observed on Route 35, however there were scattered reports of power outages. A transformer blew and wires could be seen arcing along Route 35 South near Toms River's Ocean Beach Shores neighborhood.

Fishing Friday

Early Season Back Bay Bass Fishing Tips

Striped bass season opens Friday

Striped bass season begins in the back bays and rivers March 1, and Patch caught up with Dennis Palmatier of Murphy's Hook House Bait and Tackle in Toms River for some tips. The regulations for striped bass remains two fish per angler, per day, with a minimum size limit of 28 inches. Striped bass season in the back bays and rivers runs from March 1 through Dec. 31. In the ocean, the season is open year-round. Anglers fishing Oyster Creek should keep in mind that fishing the west side of the Route 9 bridge over the creek requires a freshwater fishing license. Fishing the east side of the bridge does not, though all anglers statewide must obtain a free registration card online before fishing.

Dragons' Star Kicker Hoping to Play Another Year

Eligibility at stake in state hearing for Brick kicker with autism, Anthony Starego

Anthony Starego is already practicing for another season as kicker on the Brick Dragons varsity football team. Anthony, 18, a senior at Brick Township High School who has autism, became a well known figure in Brick – and across the country – after he overcame the odds to compete in varsity athletics and scored key points to win games for the Dragons last fall. As the offseason has lingered on, he's attended a camp hosted by former NFL kicker Michael Husted and has traveled to Florida to hone his skills. But Anthony's family members and supporters in the community worry his inspiring football career may be over. Under the rules of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association – the state's governing body for high school sports…

Safety Concerns Linger in Brick's Barrier Island Neighborhoods

Full time residents say traffic, destroyed homes could pose a problem as spring approaches

If not for the 45 degree temperature, it may as well have been a summer day on Route 35 in Brick. A constant stream of traffic clogged the state highway, and a miles-long line of cars backed up from the Mantoloking Bridge up and down the barrier island. Even on weekdays, residents say, the traffic is nonstop. But while Shore locals have tolerated the annual summer influx of traffic for as long as out-of-towners have flocked to the water, the lingering idea of "disaster tourism" in the wake of Superstorm Sandy has some residents concerned, especially as warmer weather approaches. There are concerns of looting or break-ins, residents say, but there is also an uneasiness about people stopping their cars and going on private property to take …
