Longtime Toms River Chief of Police said he will run for Ocean County Sheriff
The man who has served as Toms River's police chief since 1992 has been tapped by Republicans to run for Ocean County sheriff. Michael Mastronardy was nominated to run by Ocean County Republicans during their Monday night convention in Toms River, the chief confirmed to Patch. The post has been vacant since longtime sheriff, 84-year-old William Polhemus, died last December shortly following his re-election. Mastronardy said during an interview with Patch Tuesday afternoon that he hopes to bring his years of experience as Toms River's police leader to the county level. The Ocean County Sheriff's Office said arrested five Brick residents last month.
The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office said it made five arrests of Brick Township residents in November – four coming from drug-related charges and one from a failure to pay child support. The Sheriff’s Field Services Division said in a press release on Dec. 4 that it had made 44 arrests countywide in November. Those included three men who were charged separately with failure to comply with the Ocean County Drug Court Program: James Stevenson, 34, of Route 88, arrested Nov. 5; Anthony Ruzicka, 27, of Pershing Avenue, arrested Nov. 19; and Joshua Gaurino, 23, of Willow Avenue, Nov. 8. Little, Bartlett, Polhemus cruise to re-election
Republican incumbents coasted to re-election Tuesday night, preserving the GOP's control of the freeholder board and sheriff's office. Voters re-elected longtime GOP freeholders Gerry Little and John C. Bartlett Jr. and Sheriff William L. Polhemus by wide margins, with 99 percent of votes reported at 11:30 p.m. Unofficially, Little and Bartlett captured 111,630 votes and 117,495 votes, respectively, far exceeding the totals recorded for Democratic candidates Joseph Grisanti (74,261) and Pat Barndt (71,738). Independent challengers Scott Newman and Tracy Caprioni each struggled to capture 1 percent of votes cast, with 3,510 and 3,828 votes, respectively. The race for the Ocean County Sheriff's position includes three candidates this year, and two of them are talking about cutting overtime. Only Republican William C. Polhemus, 84, who is seeking his 10th three-year term as sheriff, declined to talk at all. Polhemus did not respond to emails and phone calls from Patch reporters for a pre-election interview. An attempt to see him at his office in the Justice Complex on Thursday was turned down, with a secretary relaying, "Thank you for taking the time to stop by, but he's not interested." Most were arrested in a sweep of deadbeat parents
Five Brick men were arrested in recent sweeps by Ocean County sheriff’s officers looking for deadbeat parents who owed their children $491,186. Those arrested and what they owed, according to Sheriff William L. Polhemus, were: Brown, Trione, McCormack and DeTuro were released after making partial support payments to the Ocean County Probation Department. Also arrested in Brick were: Polhemus said his officers have arrested 752 people this year and extradited 17 fugitives from out of state.

Township man arrested after failing to show up for arraignment hearing; others arrested for failure to pay child support, comply with Drug Court conditions
Alonzo Harrison, 48, of Lonna Court, Brick, was arrested by Ocean County Sheriff's officers after being accused of failing to show up to court for arraignment and a status conference.
