An ocean breach had forced a closure from Herbert Street to the Bay Head/Mantoloking border.
Route 35, from Herbert Street to the Bay Head/Mantoloking border, is re-opened, according to the Mantoloking police department. That section of the state highway that had been compromised by an ocean breach in the wee hours of Thursday morning opened up around 11:05 or 11:10 a.m. today, police said. The Ocean County Road Department and the municipality's emergency contractor, RWV Land & Livestock, will haul sand all day from the state Department of Transportation site in Wall, according to the Mantoloking Office of Emergency Management's Facebook page. The FEMA Center at the firehouse on Bridge Avenue in Bay Head will close for good at 7 p.m. Sat. "State and federal officials have been paying close attention to how many applicants are visiting centers throughout the state," says a prepared statement from FEMA. "Over the past weeks, the number of individuals seeking help at the center in Bay Head has dropped, indicating the information needs of survivors in the area have mostly been met." Similarly, FEMA is also closing a disaster recovery center in Newark due to declining visits. Since the Bay Head disaster recovery center opened Nov. 16, there have been nearly 2,000 visits from Hurricane Sandy survivors, the statement says. What the first devestating week looked like from my Mantoloking Road vantage point
It’s been a week since Hurricane Sandy hit and like many others, we still have no electricity at my house off Mantoloking Road. Our neighborhood is humming with the sound of generators, but I’ve been worried about the silent households ever since the temperatures dropped. In the past week, I (like you) have seen a lot, starting with a house strewn in the middle of Gale Road. A homeowner there said it washed across the bay and through the marsh onto his low lying street—a street that still reeked of diesel fuel on Thursday. Homeowners were shoveling thick, smelly muck from their driveways like it was snow that day. They thanked me for stopping and listening, even though that’s all I did. Surfers and fishermen outnumbered beach walkers on many beaches Saturday evening as Hurricane Sandy approached offshore. These surfers and fishermen were at the beach in Bay Head, which is under mandatory state orders to evacuate by 4 p.m. Sunday.
