Matthews Lands Job at Housing Authority

Former councilman now holds two positions at Brick Housing Authority

Former Brick Township Councilman Anthony Matthews is now an employee of the Brick Township Housing Authority. Matthews, who was elected to the council in 2003, resigned his post July 21. He gave few details about his reasoning for leaving the council in a resignation letter submitted that day to the township clerk, but wrote that he had been "called to serve the public in another capacity, specifically, serving some of our most vulnerable populations." Matthews started work at the authority – a number of apartment buildings off Chambers Bridge Road that house the elderly and disabled – Aug. 8. He signed an employment agreement with the authority July 21, the same day he resigned from the council. Under the terms of the agreement, a copy of…

This guy is a crook. He's currently letting landlords charge way higher than they are supposed to be for apartments Section 8 tenants are renting. They are ripping off the government. I've brought this to his attention, and he keeps coming up with one excuse/lie after another. I think he's getting kickbacks.   more ›

Catalano Chosen As New Brick Councilman

Freeholder Joe Vicari administers the oath of office

John Catalano is Brick's newest township council member. Catalano, who earlier this year declared his candidacy for a full term on the council, replaces Anthony Matthews, who abruptly resigned last month. Catalano currently serves as chairman of the township Planning Board, and has also served as a commissioner of the Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority. The council chose him over two other contenders selected by members of the township's Republican organization: Edward McBride and Dr. Joseph Buttacavoli. "They had outstanding resumes, all of them," said Council President Brian DeLuca. "It was a very difficult decision for the committee." Councilman Dan Toth, who also sits on the Planning Board, was complimentary of Catalano, …

Scaturro Back in the Running for Township Council

Decision made after Anthony Matthews leaves governing body

Brick's newest candidate for township council is incumbent Councilwoman Ruthanne Scaturro. Brick's Republican organization announced Tuesday that Scaturro will represent the party on the November general election ballot following the resignation of Councilman Anthony Matthews, who was slated to run for re-election this year. Party officials met Monday to make a decision, according to GOP Municipal Chairman Frank Pannucci, Jr. Scaturro has served on the township's governing body since 2003, having also served as council president. She announced her candidacy for a state Assembly seat earlier this year, but the county's GOP organization decided to throw its support behind Toms River Councilman Gregory P. McGuckin instead. Matthews Resigns from Brick Township Council

Resignation will take effect August 1, according to letter

Township Councilman Anthony Matthews submitted a letter of resignation to the township clerk's office today. He is stepping down from his position on the township's governing body as of Aug. 1, the letter says. Matthews said in his letter than he has been "called to serve the public in another capacity, specifically, serving some of our most vulnerable populations." Matthews did not answer his phone Thursday afternoon. It was not immediately known what the new role he mentioned might be. Matthews has served on the township council for the past seven years, and had announced his intention to be part of the Republican ticket and make a run for a third term this November. Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said that, in accordance with state law, the…
