Sunday is officially Veterans Day, a time to recognize and honor those who have served in our nation’s military. Have you thanked the veterans you know? This year, since Veterans Day falls on a weekend, it will be officially commemorated Monday, Nov. 12. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed "November 11" as the first remembrance of the end of the Great War: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the …

Veterans Day is Sunday, Nov. 11, but the day will be honored throughout Ocean County on the following day, Monday, Nov. 12. Here are some of the scheduled events:

Ceremony will take place at town hall
Brick's annual Veterans Day ceremony will take place this Sunday at the township municipal complex. Brick Township Officials will join members of Brick VFW Post No. 8867 and Brick American Legion Post No. 348 for the annual event. It will take place Sunday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the War Memorial outside the municipal building, 401 Chambers Bridge Road.

All across America, towns are commemorating the veterans who have loyally served their country in any and every way.
Brick Township gave due honors to the veterans of the United States military throughout the day. Beginning at the flags in front of the township municipal complex, the memorial services continued at the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Brick Memorial Post 348. Girls from the Breton Woods Clubhouse had composed some 'thank you' cards with a picture from the clubhouse inside and were passing them out as they walked around after the service. One veteran, 96-year-old Jerry Baker, of the 90th Infantry Division during World War II, served during the June 6, 1944 Normandy Invasion at Utah Beach, and in the Battle of the Bulge. Once they were boys who liked to ride bikes, read books and go to the beach in Seaside Park and elsewhere. Then, so quickly, they became men carrying guns, finding themselves in harm's way. Too soon, they were gone, their lives ended in wars that never seemed to end. At least 12 soldiers from Ocean County have died since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Trash, recycling pickup affected on Friday only
Brick's municipal offices will be closed Tuesday due to election day and Friday in observance of Veterans Day. According to the township, trash, recycling and bulk collections will go on as scheduled Tuesday, but not on Friday. Residents who have collections scheduled for Friday will have their pickups on Saturday. The Ridge Road recycling center will be open Tuesday, but not Friday.
