Still No Decision Made On Polhemus Replacement

Longtime Ocean County Sheriff died almost two months ago

Gov. Chris Christie has yet to name a replacement for longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus, who died almost two months ago. Undersheriff William T. Sommeling has been running the department since Polhemus died on Dec. 14. "Governor Christie has not made a decision on a replacement at this point," said Sean Conner, a spokesman for the governor's office. "When that determination is made by the Governor, it will be made known publicly in the normal course of such announcements." Polhemus, 84, died little more than a month after he had been elected to another three-year term as sheriff, following a medical procedure. Funeral Arrangements For Sheriff William L. Polhemus Announced

Two wakes will be held on Thursday, funeral set for Friday

Friends, family and law enforcement officials will gather this week to pay their respects to longtime Sheriff William L. Polhemus, who died Dec. 14, little more than a month after he was re-elected to another term. Polhemus, 84, died on last Friday, after a medical procedure performed earlier last week. “We are deeply saddened by this great loss,” said Ocean County Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little. “Bill has played an integral role in Ocean County government for many, many years. He will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Agnes and his family and many friends,” Freeholder Deputy Director John C. Polhemus, 84 died at an area hospital last night, Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari says

Longtime Ocean County Sheriff William L. Polhemus died late last night at an area hospital, Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari confirmed this morning. Polhemus, 84, had some type of cardiac procedure earlier in the week and seemed to be "doing fine," Vicari said. "Then late last night around 11 p.m., he passed away," he said. Polhemus was just re-elected to another three-year term in November. It will be up to Gov. Chris Christie to appoint his successor, Ocean County GOP Chairman George R. Gilmore said. "It would last until there is an election in November," Gilmore said. Funeral arrangements for Polhemus have not yet been announced, he said. "We are going to miss him," Gilmore said.
