A project that will see the resurfacing of nearly the entire stretch of Route 88 through Brick has begun, according to state officials. The state Department of Transportation (DOT) announced Monday that workers employed by Joseph DeFino Contracting will immediately start shoulder closures and install advance construction signage and fencing. The initial stage of construction involves work off the mainline highway and will not impact traffic, DOT representatives said in a statement. The state Department of Transportation will begin a highway rehabilitation project this spring that will stretch from mile makers 3.56 to 6.5 on Route 88 in Brick. Those mile markers represent an area of Route 88 beginning just east of the Van Zile Road intersection to just before the Chambers Bridge Road/Lanes Mill Road intersection, near the Lakewood border. The roadway will be milled, paved and its shoulders and safety features improved, officials said. Culverts over creeks along the highway will also be rehabilitated or replaced. Work on the project is set to begin March 1, according to Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis.
