Local Amway business owners Bob and Sue Covino will provide free supplies to those still cleaning up from Superstorm Sandy this Sunday. Amway has donated approximately 25 pallets – more than $150,000 worth of merchandise – to be given away to storm victims. The supplies include all-purpose, multi-purpose, bathroom, and kitchen cleaners and disinfectants. The supplies will be available for pick up at no cost on a first come, first served basis, the company said. The give-away will take place Sunday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brick Police Athletic League building, 60 Drum Point Road. Food relief group will be allowed to remain at PAL building
A group offering free hot meals to Superstorm Sandy victims will continue to base their relief effort at the Brick Police Athletic League building on Drum Point Road. Operation Brick Food Relief has been providing Sandy victims with meals ever since the storm hit. The daily meals have continued to draw people ever since, often those who cannot live in their homes and have no other meal option besides costly dinners out at restaurants. The Brick PAL organization notified the group last week that it had to be out of the building by Nov. 23 so normal PAL programs could resume, but the PAL faced an immense backlash at the Nov. 20 Brick Township council meeting. It’s a daunting task to advise people when you’re in the midst of a crisis, but as the Associated Press reported, unwanted donations can become a “disaster after the disaster.” “Ad hoc relief groups need to make sure they are taking in only items that are requested and can be distributed. The Brick Police Athletic League announced the winners of its annual "PAL of the Year" awards today. PAL of the Year is the opportunity for the Brick PAL to recognize those in the community that have gone above and beyond in assisting the Brick PAL and the youth in the community, said Dan McKevitt, PAL Executive Director. This year's winners include: The PAL's "Youth Volunteer of the Year" award went to Reilly McCarthy and Alexis Schuller who are both Brick High School students. The awards will be presented to the winners at a banquet which will take place Friday Oct. 19 at the Woodlake Country Club in Lakewood. The Brick Township Police Athletic League will host its annual spaghetti dinner and gift auction Firday evening. The dinner, which includes spaghetti and meatballs, beverage and dessert, will be held at the PAL building on Drum Point Road. The dinner will begin at 7 p.m. with the auction following at 8 p.m. According to organizers, all of the proceeds will go to fund the PAL's Youth Forum program and community service projects. The cost is $8 for adults who pre-order, $10 at the door. The cost is $4 for kids under 10 in advance, and $5 at the door. Kids age 2 and under eat free.
