Hurricane Sandy

A 'Day of Service' for Brick Residents

Brick Food Relief group leads inauguration day service activity to relieve Sandy victims

Volunteers from Operation Brick Food Relief, a non-profit corporation, canvassed the hardest hit Brick neighborhoods over the weekend to seek out those who still needed help clearing out interior and exterior items damaged by Superstorm Sandy. OBFR had partnered with Hope Worldwide’s Central Jersey Chapter, a non-profit corporation that is made up of all volunteers dedicated to helping local communities. The overall event was part of the National Day of Service which coincides with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, as well as the presidential inauguration. Over 300 volunteers from Hope Worldwide, OBFR, Jackson Memorial High School, Lakewood High School, Allstate, Hope & Healing, Central Jersey Church of Christ and Shore Points Christian Church…

Brick Food Relief Group Gets a Permanent Home

Relief operation had previously been based at Brick PAL building

Operation Brick Food Relief announced late Thursday night that it had found a permanent home for its Superstorm Sandy relief efforts. The group, which has been serving hot meals to storm victims since Sandy rolled ashore, formed at the Brick PAL building. But eventually, the PAL requested the group find a new base for its operations so the PAL's normal slate of activities could resume. After a few days at a Duchess Lane church, group organizers said their new home would be a storefront in Bay Harbor Plaza on Brick Boulevard, commonly known as the Stop 'n Shop plaza. The location keeps the organization in Brick but also moves it closer to the hard-hit Silverton section of Toms River. "We have never been more excited to share that we have …

1400 is what rent should be given the fact that it was 800 in the 80's. Whats even more funny is that the wage is declining for people, and there are no longer an abundance of skilled labor jobs or good jobs out there. So now this 1400 seems out of reach. What is not funny is that you people voted for more of this in the next four years.   more ›

Brick Food Relief Group Now at Temporary Location

Hot meals still being given out after group leaves PAL building

Operation Brick Food Relief, a volunteer group that has been providing hot meals to those displaced by Superstorm Sandy since the storm struck, is now operating from a temporary location. After reaching an agreement late last month with the Police Athletic League to remain in their Drum Point Road building, the PAL once again asked the group to leave. The PAL had originally asked the group to leave after Thanksgiving so it could resume its normal slate of programs. Then, Operation Brick Food Relief volunteers protested the decision before the township council, from which they received support. But this time, the group left the building quietly. "We graciously exited the building," said Hope Van Sickle, one of leaders of Operation Brick …

According to someone who answered the phone at the Mayor's office, right after the PAL threw Relief organization out, the dane and kick-boxing classes were being held in the schools. There was real reason that PAL had to get back in the building at that time. Same here - no donations for the PAL / PBA from my entire extended family.   more ›

Brick PAL, Food Relief Volunteers Reach Pact

Food relief group will be allowed to remain at PAL building

A group offering free hot meals to Superstorm Sandy victims will continue to base their relief effort at the Brick Police Athletic League building on Drum Point Road. Operation Brick Food Relief has been providing Sandy victims with meals ever since the storm hit. The daily meals have continued to draw people ever since, often those who cannot live in their homes and have no other meal option besides costly dinners out at restaurants. The Brick PAL organization notified the group last week that it had to be out of the building by Nov. 23 so normal PAL programs could resume, but the PAL faced an immense backlash at the Nov. 20 Brick Township council meeting. There, council members excoriated the PAL for asking the food relief group to leave…
