But violators face only a disorderly person's charge
Gun owners who live with minors are required to keep guns locked or secured, but face only a potential disorderly person's offense if they are found guilty of violating that law, according to a copy of a state statute. The statute, on the state legislative website, says: "2C:58-15. Minor's access to a loaded firearm; penalty, conditions 1. a. Marine Fisheries Council makes decision on annual regulations
New Jersey's 2013 recreational summer flounder fishery will open May 18 and run through Sept. 16, the state Marine Fisheries Council decided Thursday. The council chose one option out of several presented, which all complied with management quotas determined by federal fisheries agencies. The size limit will remain at 17.5 inches, the same as in 2012, and anglers will be able to keep five fish per day. The council had the option of extending the season for a longer period into the fall, though anglers would have had to contend with an 18 inch minimum size limit. Tonight's commute will be "treacherous," says state Police and Emergency Management
The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the National Weather Service, is monitoring a major coastal storm expected to impact the state today and tomorrow. State emergency management officials anticipate coastal flooding, high wind conditions, snow, sleet, and even blizzard conditions in the northeast corner of the state, according to a prepared statement from state Emergency Management. What the first devestating week looked like from my Mantoloking Road vantage point
It’s been a week since Hurricane Sandy hit and like many others, we still have no electricity at my house off Mantoloking Road. Our neighborhood is humming with the sound of generators, but I’ve been worried about the silent households ever since the temperatures dropped. In the past week, I (like you) have seen a lot, starting with a house strewn in the middle of Gale Road. A homeowner there said it washed across the bay and through the marsh onto his low lying street—a street that still reeked of diesel fuel on Thursday. Homeowners were shoveling thick, smelly muck from their driveways like it was snow that day. They thanked me for stopping and listening, even though that’s all I did. Due to weather conditions, Ocean County College in Toms River is closed Monday and Tuesday. Also, Georgian Court University, in Lakewood, and Brookdale Community College, in Middletown, will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. Strap supporting concrete crab snaps; outcome uncertain
A 47-foot-long horseshoe crab replica is now sunk at an artificial reef off the coast of Mantoloking, but not as planned. After Point Borough sculptor Chris Wojcik invested more than a year of time building and readying a concrete crab replica for its place at the Axel Carlson reef, it was finally sunk today. But the sinking turned out to be far more dramatic than anyone expected or wanted. Two hours were spent methodically preparing for the sinking, with the crew of the ocean crane Columbia New York filling the twin, 50-foot barges that support the structure with water, then strapping it to a crane to ensure the crab, which is welded to the barges, remained upright when it reached the ocean floor. We’ve included communities across New Jersey, so if you want to see what the campaign contributions in nearby towns are like, go right ahead. The information in the database was downloaded from the Federal Election Commission’s website. The data is based on quarterly reports, and is current through July. The data will be updated in mid-October.

Lt. Governor signs bill named for New Jersey accident victims
A 79-year old woman walking to the grocery store in her own neighborhood was killed by a driver distracted by texting. An unborn baby and his 28 year-old mother died after a driver was texting and collided with their vehicle. A new law named in honor of five victims would change the penalties for drivers who create serious bodily harm or resulting fatalities in car accidents involving texting while driving. At the signing of a new bill that would allow prosecutors to charge distracted drivers with vehicular homicide or assault, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno said the drivers who maimed and killed as a result of texting would previously face traffic tickets.
