Both the party boat crowd and shore-based locals getting in on the action
As local anglers try their collective hands at spring fishing after a tough winter all around, the striped bass seem to be cooperating as water temperatures slowly rise. Starting in the northern reaches of this column's publication area, the crew of the Big Mohawk out of Belmar finished their blackfish season this week and decided to dabble in the bass fishery on Tuesday. The result: everyone on board got their limit of stripers. "I know that is what so many of you have been waiting to hear," Capt. Chris wrote on the boat's website. The boat, which sails 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, had a similarly good day Thursday after taking Wednesday off. Few reports came in from the suds in the Manasquan and Point Pleasant areas, but anecdotally, anglers …

Thursday, April 11
Emergency dredging at Manasquan Inlet following Superstorm Sandy's impact has already been completed, but additional projects in the inlet area are still planned, officials said. The additional dredging will take place in Wills Hole Thorofare, a channel that runs south of the inlet and is the primary waterway which commercial fishing boats use to return to port following a trip at sea. The plan for additional dredging was confirmed by Steven Rochette, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has jurisdiction over New Jersey's inlets. "This work will likely take place in the summer timeframe or early fall," said Rochette. Some of the work will be completed by the Currituck, a Corps-owned dredge boat, and others will be …

NWS: Mercury hits 91 degrees; Fishing, boating, hustle and bustle on hot spring day
It took a while, but spring finally arrived Tuesday at the Jersey Shore - and it felt more like July than April! As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the high temperature at Lakehurst Naval Air Station was 91 degrees, recorded at exactly 5 p.m. At Monmouth Executive Airport in Wall, the mercury officially rose to 84 degrees, recorded at 3:55 p.m. Both temperatures were reported by the National Weather Service. A west wind kept temperatures high Tuesday even near the ocean. The ocean water temperature in Atlantic City was recorded as being 47 degrees Tuesday, while the temperature of Barnegat Bay was 58 degrees as recorded at the Mantoloking Bridge in Brick. The bay water temperature has risen dramatically over the past several days. A week ago, it was…

Shrimp Box re-opened, Alex's Inlet Bait and Tackle and Red's Lobster Pot to follow
Flooded and beaten to a pulp by Sandy, a few restaurants and a bait and tackle shop in Point Pleasant Beach near the Manasquan Inlet are just beginning to come back to life. The Shrimp Box and Outside the Box Patio Bar, 75 Inlet Dr., re-opened Wednesday afternoon for the first time since Sandy pushed five feet of water into the restaurant overlooking the harbor. Alex's Inlet Bait and Tackle Shop, 9 Inlet Dr., is shooting for a March 15 opening and Red's Lobster Pot, 57 Inlet Dr., for an April 17 opening. The Manasquan Inlet was rushing over the bulkhead, into the parking lot on Inlet Drive on Wednesday, as the Shrimp Box was serving its first customers since the end of October. "The Shrimp Box & Outside the Box Patio Bar is opening for …

VIDEO: Water rushes in Manasquan Inlet, no dune washovers yet, transformer blows along Route 35 near Ocean Beach Shores

Wednesday, March 6
Water rushed quickly into Manasquan Inlet as winds began to gust, and ocean waves crashed hard against the shore, nearly reaching dune berms that had been pushed up to mitigate potential damage as a nor'easter began to make its presence known at the Jersey Shore. Back bay water levels ran low at low tide however, though they were expected to reach several feet above normal at high tide Wednesday. As high tide approached on the oceanfront, no washover was observed on Route 35, however there were scattered reports of power outages. A transformer blew and wires could be seen arcing along Route 35 South near Toms River's Ocean Beach Shores neighborhood.
Interactive map scrolls through conditions
Wednesday's nor'easter is expected to bring more than 24 hours of high winds and heavy surf, taking its toll on the coastline. Coastal flooding is predicted as towns such as Brick and Toms River urge heading inland from the barrier island. Manasquan and Spring Lake also warned residents of heavy surf and high wind damage, suggesting residents move vehicles from ocean blocks and secure lawn furniture. In this interactive map from Swellinfo, the colors indicate wave heights and letters represent wind direction, giving you an indication of forecasted conditions. Click the play, forward or rewind buttons on the top right of the map to scroll through the coming hours and see how surf and wind conditions will unfold.
