Jenkinson's, Risden's, Martell's, Bradshaw's and Maryland Avenue beaches to be open
The public beaches in Point Pleasant Beach will be fully open by Memorial Day weekend or before, company officials said on Friday afternoon. While some Sandy-bashed beaches at the Jersey Shore are not going to be fully open by summer's unofficial start, those in Point Beach are on track to be accessible and staffed as usual. "The beaches will be open 100 percent the weekend before Memorial Day weekend and everything will be safe and clean, as it was last year," said Anthony Storino, president of Jenkinson's. Mayor says he's just waiting for state approval
Brick hopes to allow its barrier island residents and property owners to be able to drive to their properties in their own vehicles "soon," but the township needs state approval first. "We hope it will be soon, we hope it's within days," said Mayor Stephen Acropolis, on a bus tour Thursday of many of the township's Sandy-ravaged waterfront and low-lying sections. "We're just waiting for some construction work to be cleared, for Route 35 to be opened and for approval from the state Department of Transportation." Outages to increase as Sandy barrels towards the Shore
Update, 6 p.m.: Outages have reached 126,739 in Ocean County and 120,000 in Monmouth County. --- There are nearly 24,000 reported power outages in Monmouth and Ocean counties as of early Monday afternoon, according to a Jersey Central Power & Light map. As of early Monday afternoon, there were 23,559 outages reported in Monmouth and Ocean. However, there was no way to immediately learn if some without power have not reported it yet because they may have no means of communication without electricity. But according to the information available, the highest number of outages in one town in the two counties was Middletown, with 6,869. Another town with a high number of reported outages was Berkeley in southern Ocean County with 1,848. …

Utility cautions that using generators can be dangerous
JCP&L is getting ready for Hurricane Sandy, with extra staff on standby and a lot of lessons learned. JCP&L clearly has not forgotten the criticism it took after Tropical Storm Irene ravaged New Jersey in August 2011. Utility officials learned from it, made a wide array of improvements in technology, communications and planning and they're ready to put that to the test, said JCP&L spokesman Ron Morano. "We've made improvements to how we provide customer information," Morano said, adding the company is doing all it can to prepare for Sandy and to plan on how to keep officials and residents informed and well-served. Buy a beach tag from Jim DiMarco and you might get more than you bargained for. Just ask the young couple who stopped by his office on a recent Saturday morning to buy a pair of weekly tags. “Is this your wife?” DiMarco questioned the impossibly young-looking customer about his equally youthful companion. Taken aback a bit, the man answered that yes, it was. “Well, here's my recommendation,” DiMarco said. “Listen to her.” Dramatic pause. “Then do whatever you want.” The couple laughed good-naturedly, then went on their way, presumably to enjoy some beach time in Ocean City. Mayor and council oppose MTV filming reality show in town
Point Beach, like other towns before them, is about to tell Snooki and Jwoww to keep walking. MTV wants to film part of the "Snooki and Jwoww" show in Point Beach, but most Point Beach officials say that's a situation they can live without. MTV wants to film Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jennifer "Jwoww" Farley going out to night spots in Point Beach, but says they will live in a different town during the filming. And they want to start the filming on Thursday and continue through October 14, according to emails forwarded to Patch. In separate interviews, Mayor Vincent Barrella and most members of the Borough Council say they don't plan to say yes to an application for a film permit for the reality show. A late, improbable rally put Belmar beaches at the top of this week's Readers' Choice poll for favorite Jersey Shore "staycation" spots, with 113 votes. Belmar is known for it's wide, long boardwalk, and its attraction to college-age adults who enjoy the beach and the local night-life. Island Beach State Park, the only natural beach on the Jersey Shore other than Sandy Hook, led for much of the week but finished second with 82 votes. Jenkinson's Boardwalk, which includes an aquarium, rides, food and other seaside pleasures in Point Pleasant Beach, finished third with 77. Thank you for voting in this week's poll. I grew up at the Jersey Shore, and I admired her from afar - but I was closer to her than I thought
Growing up, I wanted to be the greatest at whatever I did, the guy who'd rise above the troubles of my family. I wanted to become the Muhammad Ali, even the Whitney Houston, in my corner of the world. I wanted to be the best runner, the best baseball player, the best surfer, even if I couldn't swim until I was 8. I grew up at the Jersey Shore but, for so many years, I was too afraid to swim in water that went over my head. I wanted to be the best writer, even as my college roommate at Rutgers made fun of it, calling it "a bad imitation of Shakespeare." One accident on the North Jersey Coast Line was too much. Now it's up to five since April 1, 2011.
The voices are getting louder now. They're getting louder than the thunderous waves that crash on the beaches of Manasquan, Long Branch, Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights in the middle of a Nor'easter. They're louder than the voices on that MTV show that co-opted the Jersey Shore name. Seven dead in three years. At least three of them were suicides. From 2008 to 2009, four Manasquan High School students - or recent graduates at the time - were hit and killed by NJ Transit trains. Now Wednesday, when a teenager from Spring Lake Heights died after he was hit by a train. He apparently made no attempt to get out of the way, officials said.
