National Safe Boating Week begins Saturday
National Safe Boating Week kicks off Saturday, May 18, and Patch caught up with the folks at U.S. Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet for some tips as we enter the Shore's first boating season since Superstorm Sandy.
Mantoloking among stops
Prince Harry's stateside visit includes stops in Mantoloking and Seaside Heights scheduled for tomorrow. The May 14 itinerary, announced earlier this month, puts the British royal on the barrier island visiting Hurricane-Sandy damaged areas. The one-day stop in New Jersey will have Gov. Chris Christie escorting Prince Harry, who is in the United States through this week. His schedule has him arriving in Manhattan today after stops in the Midwest. As local anglers try their collective hands at spring fishing after a tough winter all around, the striped bass seem to be cooperating as water temperatures slowly rise. Starting in the northern reaches of this column's publication area, the crew of the Big Mohawk out of Belmar finished their blackfish season this week and decided to dabble in the bass fishery on Tuesday. The result: everyone on board got their limit of stripers. "I know that is what so many of you have been waiting to hear," Capt. Chris wrote on the boat's website. Jenkinson's, Risden's, Martell's, Bradshaw's and Maryland Avenue beaches to be open
The public beaches in Point Pleasant Beach will be fully open by Memorial Day weekend or before, company officials said on Friday afternoon. While some Sandy-bashed beaches at the Jersey Shore are not going to be fully open by summer's unofficial start, those in Point Beach are on track to be accessible and staffed as usual. "The beaches will be open 100 percent the weekend before Memorial Day weekend and everything will be safe and clean, as it was last year," said Anthony Storino, president of Jenkinson's. British royalty visiting areas devastated by Hurricane Sandy
Governor Chris Christie told his NJ 101.5 listening audience he'll be chaperoning the Prince of Wales when he visits the Jersey Shore in May. “I am going to be spending the entire day with Prince Harry,” the governor said. The prince's exploits in Las Vegas became tabloid fodder and the "Ask the Governor" radio show asked how to prevent some bad press during his trip to New Jersey. "I'm thrilled that he's willing to come, he wants to come and see the destruction for himself firsthand," Christie told NJ 101.5, "and he wants to be helpful." The borough is hoping to award a bid for seawall construction at its next council meeting.
Perhaps they'll call it the Snooki Seawall. Seaside Heights is moving forward with its plan to construct a seawall the entire length of its boardwalk and is hoping to fund the entire project with money raised by MTV's Restore the Shore telethon, according to borough Mayor Bill Akers. Though a bid has not yet been awarded for construction - Akers said the borough would like to award a bid as soon as its next council meeting - it's estimated the seawall would cost about $1 million, the same amount promised to the Hurricane Sandy-battered borough by MTV. Though destruction is still evident, many are able to see past it towards recovery.
As the Jersey Shore continues its recovery, residents have been able to witness the progress first hand. Boardwalks are still missing, washed away by Hurricane Sandy, many businesses are closed, and still, some residents have been unable to return home. Still, signs of recovery exist.

Mayor says he's just waiting for state approval
Brick hopes to allow its barrier island residents and property owners to be able to drive to their properties in their own vehicles "soon," but the township needs state approval first. "We hope it will be soon, we hope it's within days," said Mayor Stephen Acropolis, on a bus tour Thursday of many of the township's Sandy-ravaged waterfront and low-lying sections. Outages to increase as Sandy barrels towards the Shore
Update, 6 p.m.: Outages have reached 126,739 in Ocean County and 120,000 in Monmouth County. --- There are nearly 24,000 reported power outages in Monmouth and Ocean counties as of early Monday afternoon, according to a Jersey Central Power & Light map. As of early Monday afternoon, there were 23,559 outages reported in Monmouth and Ocean. However, there was no way to immediately learn if some without power have not reported it yet because they may have no means of communication without electricity. But according to the information available, the highest number of outages in one town in the two counties was Middletown, with 6,869.
