Dominant Dragons Advance in State Tournament

Brick advances to the third round of the Public 'B' state tournament with a 3-1 win over Mendham

For a team with plenty of offesnive dynamo often stealing the headlines, the Brick Dragons defensive corps are quietly garnering respect of many ice hockey observers around the state. For the second time in three days, the Green Dragons allowed their opponents very few shots – this time in a 3-1 victory over Mendham. Mendham shot the puck five more times than opening round opponent Wayne Hills did earlier this week, but the Dragons still have averaged just 12.5 shots against per game in their two playoff contests. "It really comes down to the guys working hard, getting in lanes, taking shots away," said Brick head coach Bob Auriemma. Backstopping the tight defense has been sophomore goaltender Jake Lampiasi, who was a mere 68 seconds away …

Super Sophomores Carry Dragons

Ten unanswered goals fuel Brick

One year ago, Brick's second line of three freshmen each got their postseason feet wet by deep runs in the Shore and State tournaments. So far, a year later, the experience has been paying off as Brick shared the Handchen Cup with Middletown South as co-champions and in the Public 'B' state playoffs. The trio of Chris Mooney, David Kearns and Andrew Reiss flew up and down the rink again Tuesday night, as Brick crushed Wayne Hills 10-1 at home. Kearns and Reiss netted three goals each, earning hat tricks. "They have shown how capable they are plenty of times before," said Bob Auriemma, head coach of the Dragons. "(Hills) really loaded up on our first line and tried to slow them down but (Mooney, Reiss, and Kearns) connected." It was two …

Dragons Beat Mustangs in Historic Hockey Game

When the dust settled, the Dragons came out on top over the Mustangs in a historic match-up

When Brick and Brick Memorial faced off a week ago, there was no doubt that the two teams could not have played a closer game. Memorial held a 5-3 lead in the third period before the Dragons stormed back to tie the game at five with seven seconds left. The Dragons would eventually win the game 6-5. In Wednesday night's Handchen Cup quarterfinals game, the rivalry escalated to a whole new level. With 47 seconds remaining, the Green Dragons once again fought back to tie the score at five, this time, however, there would not be a tie to end the game. With senior defenseman Brian Murphy tying the game with a rocket of a slapshot, both teams squared off for the ultimate thrill of high school sports: overtime playoff hockey. The Dragons would …

'Stangs Hockey Hopeful for Postseason Splash

'Stangs hover around .500 all season long

The Mustangs just want the chance. After an eventful season that witnessed a 'brutal' schedule, Brick Memorial has made waves, returning to the Shore Conference's Handchen Cup and are still hopeful for an at-large bid to the public A state playoffs later in February. The Mustangs are 9-11-3 through Sunday's 8-0 loss to CBA, and with one game remaining on their regular season schedule, their fate to the playoffs have already been decided. Brick Memorial will play Howell on Friday, although the game will have no complications towards the conference tournament or state playoffs. "I think we didn't hit some of our goals, and I think there was some inconsistency in our play throughout the season," Brick Memorial head coach James Bruce said. "We…

Maybe they behaved badly or their grades did not warrant playing hockey. No one should be ashamed of themselves if High School Seniors don't behave the way they should or if their grades were not good. Leaving a comment on here about someone being ashamed of themselves for doing their job is wrong.   more ›

Dragons' Regular Season Ends on the Ice

Two goal lead for Middletown South proves to be too much to overcome

Things started off with ease, for the Brick Township Green Dragons (11-5-3) on Sunday night. On senior night against Middletown South, the Dragons cleanly skated the puck into the Eagles (14-5-2) zone as well as winning battles in the corners with their dump-and-chase.  Unfortunately for the Dragons, as good as things were going early, they had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard as the first period ended in a goalless tie. At one point in the dominating opening frame, Brick held a 7-0 lead in shots, as it took Middletown South nine minutes to register their first shot on net. The Dragons started the second period in similar fashion, this time cumulating with a Tyler Martin go-ahead goal. 2:30 into the second the senior Martin closed …

Offense Struggles in Dragons Loss at CBA

Only 13 shots recorded on net for the Brick Dragons on their 4-2 loss at Christian Brothers Academy.

Playing against another top team in the Shore Conference, the Brick Township boys ice hockey team knew that they would have to weather heavy pressure at times from the Christian Brothers Academy Colts. While they certainly did – holding the Colts to four goals on 24 shots on net -- offensively they could not build a consistent counter attack of their own for multiple shifts in a row in the Dragons 4-2 loss at CBA on Wednesday night. Brick managed two goals generating 13 shots on net, easily their lowest shot total of the year through three games. "We threw a lot towards the cage," said Brick head coach Bob Auriemma. "But missed the net on a ton of them." Brick started flat in the first surrendering two goals in the opening frame, …

Dragons' Kearns Named Divison MVP

Three Dragons and one Mustang named to Shore 'A' all-division teams

Behind one of the most magical seasons in Brick's history, senior captain Patrick Kearns was awarded the recognition he deserved. Not only was the defenseman named to Shore 'A' all-division first team, he was named the divsion's Most Valuable Player, as well. Kearns joined the 100-point club on Jan. 25 when he scored the game-winning goal against Howell with 55 seconds remaining in the match. Forward and fellow senior Matt Gumina joined Kearns on the all-divison first team, while goalie Eddie Rafferty was named the goalie for the division's second team. Jayson Franceschini, the captain of Brick Memorial, was named to the Shore 'A' second-team. Much like Kearns, Franceschini has had a strong game from defense. Brendan Dowd, a forward at …
