Storm-Impacted Ocean County Residents Reaching Breaking Point Over Recovery Problems

Ocean County Board of Freeholders looking for ways to streamline process as much as possible

Ocean County will not recover from Superstorm Sandy in a matter of weeks or even months, Freeholder Director John P. Kelly said today. "It's going to be years," he said. Kelly made the remarks at the Ocean County Board of Freeholders caucus meeting, a meeting dominated by the storm that ravaged Ocean County on Oct. 29. And while much of the slow recovery process depends on the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the state and local municipalities, the county needs to do as much as possible to provide guidance, Kelly said. "We want them to know county government will do everything to help them," Kelly said. "Every phone call we have received is unique and very time-consuming." Gov. Chris Christie "did his best to provide some sort of …

Motorcyclist's Family Suing Freeholder Director Over Fatal Accident

The parents of William Kolb are seeking unspecified damages against John P. Kelly in the May 2012 accident

The parents of a motorcyclist who was killed in a May 2012 collision with a sports utility vehicle in Eagleswood have filed suit against Freeholder Director John P. Kelly, the driver of that SUV. Richard and Linda Kolb of Barnegat filed a wrongful death lawsuit in state Superior Court in Ocean County in September, alleging that Kelly was negligent in his driving in the accident, which killed William D. Kolb.  Kolb, 24, of Barnegat was southbound on Route 9 on his black 2011 Harley Davidson about 6:35 p.m. on May 18 when, according to reports at that time from the State Police, he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him and collided with the right fender of Kelly's 2005 Chrysler Pacifica. Kelly had been northbound on Route 9 and was …

Freeholder Director's Daughter Pleads Guilty To Stealing $40,000 From Little Egg Harbor

Dawn Marie Kelly worked in tax assessor's office in Little Egg Harbor

Freeholder Director John P. Kelly's 30-year-old daughter has pleaded guilty to the theft of more than $40,000 during the time she worked in the tax assessor's office in Little Egg Harbor Township, the state Attorney General's Office said. Dawn Marie Kelly, Eagleswood Township, made the admission when she pleaded guilty to an accusation of third-degree theft by unlawful taking on Dec. 14 before Ocean County Superior Court Judge James M. Blaney, said Rachel Goemaat, a spokesperson for the Attorney General's Office said today. Kelly worked as the deputy tax collector in Little Egg Harbor and has since resigned, she said. Maybe Freeholder Kelly's accident was really no accident at all. Maybe the poor guy on the motorcycle who he ran down was a witness to his daughter Dawn's theft and the Freeholder was just tying up loose ends. I'd like to know what drug she wasted 40k on? What was her drug of choice?   more ›

Freeholder Director Sidesteps Question of Interest in Sheriff's Post

Kelly has expressed interest in becoming head of the Ocean County sheriff's department in the past

Does John P. Kelly want to be the next Ocean County sheriff? It's a question Kelly, who just took over as freeholder director, won't answer. "I am committed to doing the best job possible as freeholder director," Kelly said in front of county employees and others as the Ocean County Board of Freeholders prepared to go into closed session Wednesday at the biweekly preboard meeting, in response to a question. But it's common knowledge among party insiders that Kelly has wanted to be sheriff long before longtime Sheriff William L. Polhemus died in December. Kelly - who has no law enforcement background - was already interested in the position when former Undersheriff Wayne L. Rupert died suddenly in October 2011. Polhemus appointed William T…

Vicari, Freeholders Pleased With Utilities' Storm Response

Power restoration, communication were good in wake of Saturday's storm, officials say

For months, Ocean County Freeholder Joseph H. Vicari criticized officials of Jersey Central Power & Light over a lack of communication and a lack of responsiveness in the wake of Hurricane Irene. On Wednesday, Vicari said the company's response after a powerful thunderstorm rolled through the Shore area was much better. "We got a personal commitment from their president for extra crews and extra manpower," Vicari said, citing a meeting he had with JCP&L president Don Lynch that occurred July 3. "JCP&L did keep their word," he said. "Under the conditions they did a good job." The fast-moving thunderstorm, which packed wind gusts up to 78 mph and lightning that killed a woman in Monmouth Beach and struck numerous trees and buildings …

I must say, JCP&L has done an exceptional job is this month's roll-thru storms in maintaining power in the Whiting area, which, of course in these senior villages, has mostly buried lines. But a thank you is deserved some times, you know. This coming from me being previously a PSE&G customer in Essex County which always did an outstanding job there.   more ›

Reading this story about the location, I know mile marker 63 coming off the GSP is rte72. And this incident occured at mile marker 65.5 on rte9, wouldn't that be Manahawkin, Stafford Township? Being a MC rider myself, and kinda of knowing the area, there are area's where passing is permitted. The speed limit between Barneget & Manahawkin varies too, 35mph-50mph, and south of rte72, the speed …   more ›
