Longtime Toms River Councilman says Brick Township roots a proud part of his victory
Gregory McGuckin’s face reddened as he smiled behind glistening eyes to accept victory as District 10 assemblyman, thanking supporters from the podium of the county Republican victory party Tuesday night. The longtime Toms River Council president couldn’t take a step in any direction without being greeted by a handshake, a hug, or congratulations. “I am so proud to stand here,” McGuckin said. “We are a party of opportunity and I am so thankful for the opportunity.” The GOP team of James Holzapfel, McGuckin and David Wolfe won seats by a wide margin. Holzapfel, a Brick resident and incumbent assemblyman, will take the two-year Senate seat long inhabited by retiring incumbent Andrew Ciesla, while McGuckin and incumbent Wolfe will head to the…

State data shows Brick Republicans have spent five times more on the council election than Brick Democrats
Brick's Republican organization has raised more than 15 times as much money as township Democrats this election cycle and has spent more than five times as much, according to state data. Both parties submitted reports to the state's Election Law Enforcement Commission earlier this month which list how much money they have raised, how much money they have spent as well as which people or businesses donated sums of money larger than $300. In all, the total amount raised by the four Republican candidates this election cycle amounted to $183,640. Democrats reported raising $12,106. Between …

Democrats, Republicans kick off campaigns
One of the Democrats campaigning for township council pledged if he and his running mates are elected in November, they will cut the salary of Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis to $15,000 per year if he does not resign from a position at the Toms River Municipal Utilities Authority. "We're going to give him an ultimatum of either resigning from his Toms River MUA job … or we will cut his salary to a part-time salary of $15,000," Democratic council candidate John Ducey told Brick Patch. Though Acropolis is not up for re-election this year, the four Democratic candidates for township council have made the mayor the focus of their campaign, going so far as to name their campaign website StopAcropolis.com. The Democrats have said Acropolis, who holds…

GOP primary is uncontested this year in Brick
A former Democratic candidate for the township council will go up against the local party organization in Tuesday's primary election. Joe Lamb, who previous ran unsuccessfully for a spot on the governing body in the general election, is a staple at township council meetings, often questioning the policies of the all-Republican council. The Democratic organization chose John Ducey, Susan Lydecker, James Fozman and Robert Moore as its ticket this year. Lamb did not seek the party's endorsement this time around, but instead decided to mount a primary run against the regular party organization by himself. He'll appear on Tuesday's ballot under the Brick Democrats for Fiscal Accountability banner. Lamb told Patch that he felt the party tried to…
