President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney faced off in the first of three presidential debates Wednesday night. The debate was held at the University of Denver in Colorado. President Obama, 51, vying for his second term, was leading by four percentage points in a national poll over challenger Mitt Romney, 65, before the debate. However, political pundits and speculation on Huffington Post questioned whether the debate could change the standings. The candidates are expected to debate each other two more times - once on Oct. 16 and once on Oct. 22. The topics for those debates will be domestic policy on the 16th and foreign policy on the 22nd. Even a small bump from Wednesday night's domestic policy forum could make the …

Four Democrats take on four GOP incumbents
Four Democrat challengers will attempt to oust four Republican incumbents in order to win control of the township's governing body in Tuesday's election. The seven member township council is currently occupied by all Republicans. In order for Democrats to win a majority, all four of their candidates must come out victorious at the polls Tuesday. As the campaign drew to a close, candidates from both sides said they felt confident. "I feel very positive," said Brian DeLuca, the incumbent council president who is up for re-election. "I've been walking door to door, and a lot of people are very happy with the direction of the revenue we're going to be generating" for the township through various projects. John Ducey, one of the candidates on …

Patch separates facts from fiction as GOP ad targets character of Democratic council hopefuls
Republicans have taken aim at the character of Democratic township council hopefuls, accusing each of various character flaws in a flyer and full-page advertisement in a local newspaper. The flyer, which was mailed to the homes of registered Republicans in town last weekend, accuses candidate John Ducey of taking public pensions and benefits even though he has campaigned against the practice; Susan Lydecker of having multiple addresses and financial problems over the past several years; Robert Moore of being a "phantom" who voters have never heard of; and perhaps the most serious charge - James Fozman of being convicted of a criminal offense, "constributing to the delinquency of a minor - drugs" in Somerset County. "It's unfortunate that …

Rosen accuses Vicari of slander
Threatening to sue Republican Freeholder Director Joseph H. Vicari for slander, Democratic candidate Michele Rosen of Waretown demanded he retract and apologize for claims that she was admitted into a pre-trial intervention program after being indicted for theft by deception, and had the record of the indictment expunged. Vicari did neither, instead raising new claims late Wednesday about civil court “judgments’’ against Rosen and her history of “bounced checks.’’ He conceded he relied on “rumors’’ about her entry into a pre-trial intervention program, which can lead to the dismissal of criminal charges if the accused meets the condition of that program. Likewise, he said he repeated rumors about her having the indictment expunged. “It’s …

Academics, budgeting among top priorities, group says
Three challengers ousted two incumbents and took one open seat in the Brick Board of Education election Wednesday. Sharon Kight, a former board president, along with running mates Larry Reid and Susan Suter, all won posts on the school board. They defeated a ticket of incumbents Vicky Leone and Robert Merola, along with newcomer Jack Zawacki, as well as Konstantine Goulas, John Barton and David Fischer. The winners celebrated their victory Wednesday evening, pledging changes would be coming to the district. For Kight, being elected for a second stint on the board will be about “community.” “It feels good” to be elected, Kight said. “I think that the Brick community has wanted to be a community again, and I think things have been lacking. …

Guiding readers through a vote which could change Brick Township
Brick voters have a lot to consider before entering the voting booth Wednesday. As residents of all of New Jersey's 566 municipalities go to the polls to choose their school board members and decide whether to give the OK to their school tax levy proposals, Brick is one of 14 municipalities whose residents will also get to decide whether to allow their municipal governing body to exceed a 2 percent cap on tax levy expenditures. Though the questions appear on the same ballot, the referendums on the school tax levy and municipal cap exception are for two, distinct spending plans. The Board of Education has adopted a school tax levy to be presented to voters and the township council has decided to place a municipal referendum on the ballot. …

However, Kyrillos will not make a stop in Union Beach in the district he represents.. He abandoned his District 13 constituents by not even making a comment to support Union Beach in its fight to prevent a 38-story noisy industrial wind turbine with blades each the size of a cell tower from being erected way too close to a lot of homes. It would further degrade home values in our working class …   more ›
