Complaint from mayor's office filed with state DCA
Brick Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis has filed a formal ethics complaint against councilman and Republican mayoral primary candidate Dan Toth for what he alleges is Toth's seeking expedited zoning and permit approvals for his business clients in town. The complaint was filed with the Local Finance Board, an arm of the state Department of Community Affairs, which has the power to adjudicate ethics complaints against municipal council members. A copy of the complaint was also sent to the Ocean County Prosecutor's office. The complaints were filed March 20 and 21, respectively. Acropolis' allegations against Toth surfaced in September following a township council vote that would have restructured township government. Toth eventually abstained …

Party has yet to make endorsement of a candidate
Brick councilman Dan Toth will vie for his party's nomination for mayor this year. Toth, a Republican, told Patch he has decided against seeking the chance to run for another term on the council and has gone before a screening committee to seek the township Republican organization's endorsement to be its mayoral candidate in the current election cycle. "I had originally screened to run both for council and mayor, and then I narrowed it down to leaving my name in just for mayor," said Toth. The party's announcement of who it will endorse as its candidate for mayor is expected to come next week. But Toth said even if he is not endorsed, he intends to keep his name on the primary ballot. "If I'm not selected by the screening committee, then …

Councilman forced to abstain after legal opinion
An attempt to veto Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis' veto of a controversial ordinance that sought to restructure Brick's municipal government failed Tuesday night. A pair of ordinances that made up the restructuring both passed in 4-3 votes last month, but a supermajority of five votes was required for the override resolution to be passed by the township council. Though one of the three council members who voted against the ordinances last month – Councilman Bob Moore – switched sides and voted in favor of the override, Councilman Dan Toth was forced to abstain after Acropolis delivered a lengthy legal opinion from a conflict attorney advising Toth against voting on the measure. The lack of Toth's vote meant a supermajority of council members …

Rift between administration and council may be growing
Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis' administration will now bar township employees from attending meetings of small committees of the township council. In a letter to township council members this week, Business Administrator Scott Pezarras said the mayor has decided township employees should not attend the committee meetings of three council members, and questions about township business should be submitted in writing. "I can't ask the council president any questions in public because he refuses to answer," said Acropolis. "What I decided to do was to have everything put in writing. If the council has a question about a project being done, put them in an e-mail and we'll answer them for you." Council President John Ducey said Thursday that the …

During a heated discussion on a proposed Brick municipal government restructuring plan, Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis implied Councilman Dan Toth – a fellow Republican – was supporting the ordinance in order to oust Deputy Business Administrator Juan Bellu from his position in township government after he notified Acropolis of e-mails Toth had sent. Bellu's job would be eliminated under the restructuring plan, which passed and is now expected to be vetoed by Acropolis. Acropolis read from e-mails sent to Bellu from Toth, who was asking about the progress of permit approvals for two liquor stores, Tenali Wines and Joe Canals. Toth is in the liquor business and often abstains from liquor license votes at council meetings, citing a potential …

Ducey, Toth will be the only two to take taxpayer-funded health benefits
All but two of the members of the Brick Township Council will decline taxpayer-funded health care benefits as a result of their council position this year. Council members Jim Fozman, Susan Lydecker and Bob Moore, all newly elected this year, said they would decline the health benefit package, which costs between approximately $9,900 and $25,800 per member, according to figures provided by the township. Council members Joseph Sangiovanni and Domenick Brando also decline the benefits package. Councilman Dan Toth takes the benefits. Council President John Ducey said at the Jan. 10 council meeting that he has decided to take the benefits because his wife was laid off from her job, and his family is now enrolled in a COBRA plan from her old …

Tense moments after mayor calls on council to cut salaries
Brick Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis will voluntarily cut his salary to $1 per year for the remainder of his term, he announced at the end of Tuesday night's township council meeting. Acropolis currently earns $52,000 in his post as the full-time mayor of Brick, but has taken criticism for also maintaining another full-time job as Toms River MUA commissioner from which he earns $92,000. "The people have spoken loud and clear," Acropolis said, referencing the recent township council election, where incumbent Republicans were swept out of office by Democratic newcomers."If we as elected officials don't heed what the people say, then shame on us." Democrats, during the campaign, had threatened to reduce Acropolis' salary to $15,000 per year if he…
