An ocean breach had forced a closure from Herbert Street to the Bay Head/Mantoloking border.
Route 35, from Herbert Street to the Bay Head/Mantoloking border, is re-opened, according to the Mantoloking police department. That section of the state highway that had been compromised by an ocean breach in the wee hours of Thursday morning opened up around 11:05 or 11:10 a.m. today, police said. The Ocean County Road Department and the municipality's emergency contractor, RWV Land & Livestock, will haul sand all day from the state Department of Transportation site in Wall, according to the Mantoloking Office of Emergency Management's Facebook page. "Please use caution when driving around town as sections of East Avenue and Barnegat Lane are still covered with sand and debris," the Facebook post says. The town remains open to …

No spring break in 2013
Like many other area schools, the Ocean County Vocational Technical School district will be closed until Nov. 12. The district includes the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences (MATES), in Manahawkin, the Performing Arts Academy (PAA), in Lakehurst, and many other instructional programs offered at multiple sites throughout the county. A recorded phone call made to parents of students at the academies said the closure is due to the many sending districts that are closed this coming week due to damage from Sandy. The message also said that the time off will be made up during the spring break in April, so students will not have off at that time.

Benihana, El Chico haven't been open since Valentine's Day
Hanging on the doorway of Benihana in the Ocean County Mall were red heart decorations, setting the mood for Valentine's Day. But the Japanese restaurant chain and its neighbor, El Chico, have been closed since Feb. 15. The handmade signs on both restaurants' doors read: "Sorry, we're closed." On Feb. 16, furniture was being loaded onto a moving truck from the restaurant, and questions were directed to the public relations firm that represents the Ocean County Mall Simon Property. The public relations specialist for the mall however declined to comment on specific tenants and instead said questions should be directed to the tenants themselves. Calls placed to the corporate headquarters of both Benihana and El Chico chains were not …

Closure needed for ongoing maintenance work
Beginning Monday night, the Route 88 bridge over the Point Pleasant Canal will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to about 6 a.m. for approximately five consecutive nights. The state Department of Transportation is hoping the closures will not be needed after Friday. The closures are necessary for DOT’s contractor, Agate Construction, to test a new mechanical system on the vertical-lift bridge. Waterway traffic will not be impeded. The DOT will employ variable message signs on Route 88 to alert motorists of the bridge closures and detour. The following detours will be in place during the closures: The right lane on Route 88 eastbound will remain closed to traffic. All work is weather dependent. The DOT is repairing the mechanical and …

Local traffic detours onto Double Trouble Road for overnight weekend demolition work
Garden State Parkway traffic will be diverted onto local roads overnight this weekend as construction crews demolish an overpass in Beachwood. Detours begin 9 p.m. tonight, Friday. The northbound Parkway will be closed to traffic between Exits 77 and 80 from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, and the southbound Parkway will be closed to traffic between the same exits from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday. The temporary closings will enable work crews to remove the structure that once carried Birch Street over the Parkway in the borough of Beachwood.
