Brick Branch Celebrated During National Library Week

Council issues proclamation in support of the township branch of county library system

The Township Council honored the Brick branch of the Ocean County Library system Tuesday in the midst of National Library Week. The governing body unanimously offered a proclamation in support of the Brick branch during its regular public meeting. "It's so important that the free public libraries... continue to exist today and benefit so many people," Councilman Dan Toth said. Branch manager Susan Gardiner accepted the proclamation on behalf of the branch. "I just want to... just tell you, the community, what an honor it is to serve you," she said. National Library Week began Sunday and is celebrated through Saturday. The proclamation recognizes the designation in the township while encouraging "all citizens to take some time to visit the …

Council Scuttles Liquor Store License Sale

Governing body declines to move resolution that would have OK'd sale of 1 distribution license

A proposal to sell a liquor store license died without a governing body vote Tuesday night. The Township Council declined to move a resolution that would have authorized bidding on a plenary distribution license at its regular meeting, effectively killing the measure that had drawn residents' ire when initially proposed. "I don't believe we need to put the license out to bid at this time," said council President John Ducey, who indicated he would have voted against the resolution. He didn't get the chance. None of the five other council members present offered to "move" the resolution for a vote, which prompted light applause from the back of council chambers. "Now isn't the right time," Ducey said. The resolution would have solicited …

Mr Toth is a distributor not a store. He sells to the stores, so your politically based attack is unjustified. Maybe he feels being closer to route 9 and 195 is better for his distribution system?   more ›

Police: Brick Man Assaulted Woman, Resisted Arrest

Authorities probe apparent arson on Midstreams Place, Lakewood man charged with stealing computer from Walmart

A Chambers Bridge Road man was jailed Friday after police said he assaulted a township woman. Michael Barao, 28, was charged after police responded to a residence on the 200 block of Chambers Bridge Road on a report of an assault, police said. Barao broke a 22-year-old woman's nose and then held her and two of her friends against their will in the victim's residence by confiscating their cell phones, police said. However, the women distracted Barao, and the alleged assault victim was able to escape to a neighbor's home, where she called police, Capt. John Rein said. Barao fled the home before police arrived but later returned, where he was arrested. However, he failed to comply with officers' orders and kicked and flailed his arms when …

Township to Test Phone Alert System

Residents may receive automated call Wednesday night

Residents may receive an automated call this evening, as the township is testing its phone notification system. After receiving the call, residents are asked to register to receive future non-emergency calls by going to the township's website and clicking the "Notification System Registration" icon.  Also, those who receive a call but experience problems, such as a partial message or disconnection, are asked to send an email to R911@twp.brick.nj.us with a description of the problem.   The system is used to disseminate non-emergency information, such as events, tax notifications and more. It also can be used to quickly get the word out about emergencies, although the township also uses social media, its website, the press and other outlets …

Applicant proposes conversion of Brick Plaza business to a Quaker Steak & Lube

Patrons of Chevy's Fresh Mex could soon be dining on the wings and burgers offered by Quaker Steak & Lube if the Planning Board grants approval to modify the existing Brick Plaza restaurant. The board will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the municipal building to hear testimony from Lube it Up LLC on the Allendale company's plan to convert the existing Chevy's at 1036 Cedar Bridge Road into a Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant. Lube it Up seeks several variances and final site plan approval to "rebrand and modify" the Brick Plaza mainstay, according to application documents filed at the municipal building. Suspect in Cop Death Charged With Murder

Jahmell Crockam, 19, is accused of killing a Lakewood officer who graduated from Howell High School and lived in Manchester.

Police have filed murder and weapons charges against the suspect in the Friday shooting death of a Lakewood police officer. Jahmell Crockam, 19, is accused of killing Chris Matlosz, a 27-year-old Lakewood police officer from Manchester who was a Howell High School alumnus, authorities said. The charges were announced at a Saturday afternoon press conference in Lakewood by Ocean County prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford. The charges were filed after a police investigation established probable cause, Ford said. Bail will be set at $5 million cash. Crockham goes by the street name of "Sav," short for savage, Ford said. He's considered dangerous and should not be approached. "What was a routine stop suddenly turned deadly," she said. "That …

Dear politically correct prosecutor of ocean county. I would encourage this savage to shoot it out with arresting officers and come out on the losing end, thus saving the tax payer's of NJ a lot of wasted money. This animal is an example of what is wrong in this country and he is just breathing up good air. And B.T.W. since he was a convicted felon how could he have a gun in this state? We need …   more ›
