Police: Brick Man Breaks Into Home, Leads Officers on Chase

Buena Vista Drive man held on $100,00 bail

A Brick resident is being held in Ocean County Jail on $100,000 bail after police said he broke into a friend's house and later fled from pursuing officers. Wilie M. Garner, 52, of Buena Vista Drive, broke into a Harvard Avenue home by kicking in a bedroom sliding door at approximately 2:40 a.m. Friday, police said. The resident knew Garner, and police said Garner's wife was at the Harvard Avenue home at the time of the alleged burglary. The resident scuffled with Garner and suffered a small cut to his leg while attempting to shove Garner out of the house and onto a rear deck, according to a release prepared by Capt. John Rein. Garner left the home, struck his wife's vehicle with his own, and fled in his gold Mercury east on Route 88, …

Senior Hospitalized After Triggering Chemical Reaction at Home

Reedy Drive man used bleach and sulfuric acid to unclog a drain, police said

A Reedy Drive resident was hospitalized today after being exposed to hazardous fumes in his home. The 74-year-old male resident called police before 11 a.m. this morning to report his home filling with fumes after he inadvertently caused a chemical reaction while trying to unclog a toilet. The resident used bleach Wednesday night to try to unclog the drain, police Capt. John Rein said, and followed that up with sulfuric acid this morning. The combination of the bleach and sulfuric acid caused a chemical reaction producing foam and fumes, Rein said. The resident was transported to Ocean Medical Center for treatment after reporting difficulty breathing. His dog also showed effects from the fumes and was turned over to a family member, Rein …

"It's so important that the free public libraries... continue to exist today and benefit so many people," Councilman Dan Toth said. Council Scuttles Liquor Store License Sale

Governing body declines to move resolution that would have OK'd sale of 1 distribution license

A proposal to sell a liquor store license died without a governing body vote Tuesday night. The Township Council declined to move a resolution that would have authorized bidding on a plenary distribution license at its regular meeting, effectively killing the measure that had drawn residents' ire when initially proposed. "I don't believe we need to put the license out to bid at this time," said council President John Ducey, who indicated he would have voted against the resolution. He didn't get the chance. None of the five other council members present offered to "move" the resolution for a vote, which prompted light applause from the back of council chambers. "Now isn't the right time," Ducey said. The resolution would have solicited …

Mr Toth is a distributor not a store. He sells to the stores, so your politically based attack is unjustified. Maybe he feels being closer to route 9 and 195 is better for his distribution system?   more ›

Police: Brick Man Assaulted Woman, Resisted Arrest

Authorities probe apparent arson on Midstreams Place, Lakewood man charged with stealing computer from Walmart

A Chambers Bridge Road man was jailed Friday after police said he assaulted a township woman. Michael Barao, 28, was charged after police responded to a residence on the 200 block of Chambers Bridge Road on a report of an assault, police said. Barao broke a 22-year-old woman's nose and then held her and two of her friends against their will in the victim's residence by confiscating their cell phones, police said. However, the women distracted Barao, and the alleged assault victim was able to escape to a neighbor's home, where she called police, Capt. John Rein said. Barao fled the home before police arrived but later returned, where he was arrested. However, he failed to comply with officers' orders and kicked and flailed his arms when …

Township to Test Phone Alert System

Residents may receive automated call Wednesday night

Residents may receive an automated call this evening, as the township is testing its phone notification system. After receiving the call, residents are asked to register to receive future non-emergency calls by going to the township's website and clicking the "Notification System Registration" icon.  Also, those who receive a call but experience problems, such as a partial message or disconnection, are asked to send an email to R911@twp.brick.nj.us with a description of the problem.   The system is used to disseminate non-emergency information, such as events, tax notifications and more. It also can be used to quickly get the word out about emergencies, although the township also uses social media, its website, the press and other outlets …

Applicant proposes conversion of Brick Plaza business to a Quaker Steak & Lube

Patrons of Chevy's Fresh Mex could soon be dining on the wings and burgers offered by Quaker Steak & Lube if the Planning Board grants approval to modify the existing Brick Plaza restaurant. The board will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the municipal building to hear testimony from Lube it Up LLC on the Allendale company's plan to convert the existing Chevy's at 1036 Cedar Bridge Road into a Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant. Lube it Up seeks several variances and final site plan approval to "rebrand and modify" the Brick Plaza mainstay, according to application documents filed at the municipal building.
