Beaton Point to Remain In Its Natural State

Site was preserved with township, county funds

The Beaton Point tract on the Manasquan River will remain the way it is. The 9.6 acre peninsula off Beverly Beach Road in the township's Herbertsville section was preserved after the township and county split the $1,257,500 price of the property. Officials say the site, which was dedicated last month, will not be developed or improved. Rather, it will remain in its natural state. Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said that the unspoiled plot of land was once under consideration for six or seven homes, but an outcry from residents caused the township to investigate its purchase and preservation. "At one time, there was a plan to build homes there," he said. "Thankfully, the plan never came to fruition and we were able to work with the county …

Beaton Point Tract Dedicated

County, township teamed up to buy 9.6 acres

A 9.6 acre tract on the Manasquan River in the township's Herbertsville section has been officially dedicated as preserved land. Beaton Point, a peninsula located in the Beverly Beach neighborhood, could have been sold to developers by its private owner, but the township and county agreed to jointly purchase the tract in 2010 in order to preserve it as open space. The two governmental bodies split the $1,257,500 price of the property. The county used funding from a state grant as well as its natural lands trust fund to help pay for the purchase. "This site is fantastic,'' Freeholder John C. Bartlett Jr. said at the time of the purchase. Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said that the unspoiled plot of land was once under consideration for six or …

Township Council Authorizes Purchase of Riverfront Tract

Sylvia Beaton property is located on the Manasquan River in the Herbertsville section

The township council has authorized its half of the funding required to purchase Beaton Point, a property located in the Beverly Beach neighborhood in the Herbertsville section. The 9.6 acre tract is located on the Manasquan River. The county will foot the other half of the $1,257,000 price of the property. Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said that the unspoiled plot of land was once under consideration for six or seven homes, but outcry from residents caused the township to investigate the purchase. At one time, Acropolis said, the land was appraised at $6 million, but more recent appraisals significantly brought down the price of the plot. "We’re talking about a bluff overlooking the Manasquan River," Acropolis said. "We had an outcry of …

Brick, County Team Up On Manasquan River Land Buy

Township and county officials will both kick in funding to purchase waterfront tract off Beverly Beach Road in the Herbertsville section.

Brick Township and Ocean County officials are teaming up to buy a 9.6-acre peninsula called Beaton Point on the Manasquan River as part of their open space preservation effort. "This site is fantastic,'' said Freeholder John C. Bartlett Jr., describing the property along Beverly Beach Road. The $1,257,500 price will be split between the town and the county, according to Bartlett. The county's share will be reduced to $454,250 because the freeholders will spend $174,500 received for allowing the state to use Gull Island in the river as a dredge spoil site. The state required that the money paid to the county be spent on projects in the Manasquan River, Bartlett explained. The balance of the county money will come from its natural lands …

This kind of preservation of Open Space enhances the value of homeowners' real estate. It also enhances the quality of life which is especially important in communities such as Brick Township that are becoming increasingly more densely populated. As I understand it, financing of Open Space preservation efforts must be approved by voters.   more ›
