Toms River Home Burglarized, Owner’s Dog and Possessions Stolen

Resident loses 11-week old puppy along with possessions in burglary

A Toms River residence was broken into on Friday morning, but the thieves walked off with more than just worldly goods — they took the homeowner’s pet dog, as well. Mary Frances Yurkel of Toms River described that her mother Patricia Donahue, who resides behind Shop Rite in the vicinity of Fischer Boulevard and Bay Avenue, was the victim of a burglary yesterday morning. “These people kicked in the front door, took all of her jewelry, a laptop, a firebox with all of the family's historical and pertinent information, and Fiona, an 11-week old Havanese mix (dog),” said Yurkel. Yurkel described Fiona as having a white body, black ears, one black eye, and a black nose. “My mother is losing faith as time passes. My sisters and I are pounding the…

Ocean County Honors Its Fallen Heroes

Ocean County law enforcement officials and officers gather to remember those lost in the line of duty in the last year

There are 12 names etched in the monuments at Ocean County Park in Lakewood. It's a list that grew longer in the last year, as more law enforcement families joined those whose family members made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives in the line of duty. During the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Day Service, on the grounds at the Ocean County Police Academy within the park, those officers were remembered again, as the county's entire law enforcement family paused to honor their sacrifices. "I've always believed that we are one large law enforcement family," said Juan Mattos Jr., U.S. Marshal for the District of New Jersey, who was the keynote speaker at the service. "When one of us bleeds, we all bleed." "Remembrance is the …

Alleged Leaf-Blower Thief Indicted

Faces three counts in Superior Court stemming from Bradley Beach burglary

A Brick man was indicted this week on charges he broke into a Bradley Beach home and stole a leaf-blower late last year, documents show.  Police also charged Michael Britton, 25, of Maple Avenue, with unlawful possession of a prescription drug -- alprazolam -- when he was arrested in the borough on Dec. 16, the indictment says.  The leaf-blower was valued at $500, the indictment says.  Alprazolam, which goes by the brand names of Xanax and Niravam, is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health.  Britton faces third-degree charges of burglary, theft of movable property, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, according to the indictment signed by County Prosecutor Peter E. …

State Plans Reduction of 'No Wake' Buoys in Local Waterways

Large number of floating buoys may be a hazard, officials say

Most boaters have been there. It's night time, but channel markers are there to guide you back to your marina or boat ramp. The only obstacle, of course, is the large number of buoys marking No Wake zones that dot the path between the open bay and home port. On a busy summer weekend, the buoys can sometimes cause stress as boaters try to navigate skinny channels in the nation's most densely populated state. Boaters who equate the proliferation of buoy markers in waterways such as Barnegat Bay to a minefield of anchored obstacles will see some relief this summer, however, as the state will reduce the number of No Wake warning buoys up and down the coast. The total number of buoys, which mark areas in which boaters must slow to near-idle …

I think when you take your boating course you should have to take a waterway test too, lust like a car. Boats are more dangerous then people think. Boaters should be required to have a certain knowledge level to be allowed to drive. You can always spot the ones who don't know anything about what they're doing. Also, the boaters who just don't care and are calling boaters "Old Boy's Club", should …   more ›

Route 70 Accident Victim Recovering as Friends Rally Support

Edwin Triana one of three people injured in May 4 accident

After a night out, Toms River resident Edwin Triana was almost always the designated driver. So the cruel irony of his being critically injured in an accident where police say a drunken driver crashed into his car has added insult to injury, his friends say. "The worst part about it is that he never really drinks when he goes out and was always the designated driver," said Jim Teja, a friend of Triana's. "So it's really bad luck that he would be the one injured in a drunk driving accident." Bryan Vanderburgh, 27, of Brick, has been charged with drunken driving in the May 3 crash, during which police say he ran a red light at the intersection of routes 70 and 88 and crashed his SUV into Triana's 1994 Acura Integra. Triana, 28, was driving …

Brick Man Admits Possessing Child Porn

Under plea deal, 31-year-old township man could face 10 years in prison

A Brick man admitted he possessed more than 600 images of child pornography on his home computer and e-mailed them to himself for storage purposes. Christopher Seufert, 31, pleaded guilty Monday to a single count of possession of child pornography before U.S. District Judge Mary L. Cooper in Trenton federal court. Seufert admitted he possessed more than 600 images of child pornography on a computer located in his residence in March 2010, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman. He also admitted using his America Online email account to send some of the images to himself and store them. Seufert acknowledged to authorities that among the images he possessed were photographs which depicted minors engaging in sexually explicit…
