Toms River Home Burglarized, Owner’s Dog and Possessions Stolen

Resident loses 11-week old puppy along with possessions in burglary

A Toms River residence was broken into on Friday morning, but the thieves walked off with more than just worldly goods — they took the homeowner’s pet dog, as well. Mary Frances Yurkel of Toms River described that her mother Patricia Donahue, who resides behind Shop Rite in the vicinity of Fischer Boulevard and Bay Avenue, was the victim of a burglary yesterday morning. “These people kicked in the front door, took all of her jewelry, a laptop, a firebox with all of the family's historical and pertinent information, and Fiona, an 11-week old Havanese mix (dog),” said Yurkel. Yurkel described Fiona as having a white body, black ears, one black eye, and a black nose. “My mother is losing faith as time passes. My sisters and I are pounding the…

Ocean County Honors Its Fallen Heroes

Ocean County law enforcement officials and officers gather to remember those lost in the line of duty in the last year

There are 12 names etched in the monuments at Ocean County Park in Lakewood. It's a list that grew longer in the last year, as more law enforcement families joined those whose family members made the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives in the line of duty. During the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Day Service, on the grounds at the Ocean County Police Academy within the park, those officers were remembered again, as the county's entire law enforcement family paused to honor their sacrifices. "I've always believed that we are one large law enforcement family," said Juan Mattos Jr., U.S. Marshal for the District of New Jersey, who was the keynote speaker at the service. "When one of us bleeds, we all bleed." "Remembrance is the …

World Trade Center Steel Brought to Brick

Piece of the former World Trade Center to become part of permanent monument

No one in Brick will ever forget. That was the message sent by local officials to those gathered at Windward Beach Park Friday as a piece of steel from one of the towers of the former World Trade Center in New York City was brought to the township by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The 118 pound, 41 inch-long piece of steel didn't look pretty. There was some rust, some burn marks and some dirt. But that was the way it's supposed to look, a reminder of the disastrous events of Sept. 11, 2001 when a group terrorists flew airliners into the buildings, demolishing them and killing 3,000 people in the process. "It's part of that healing process," said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis. "Our Angel in Anguish, plus the steel, really …

Supporters Rally for Drum Point Principal

Allison McConnell will have a hearing to determine whether she gets tenure

The bulk of Thursday night's five-hour-long Board of Education meeting was spent discussing a single school district employee: Drum Point Road Elementary School principal Allison McConnell. Last month, the board denied tenure to McConnell, which means she would be demoted to her previous tenured position of assistant principal next school year. About 150 of McConell's supporters came to the meeting bearing signs and frequently shouting words of support from the seats at the Brick Township High School auditorium. After the board completed its regular business, the marathon public comment portion of the meeting began with McConnell's attorney, William Nossen of the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association, delivering a 45-minute-…

An article in today's Asbury Park Press (Sat, May 19th) reports that the letter advising Allison McConnell she would not be given tenure states "…you have failed to demonstrate the standard of excellence required by the Board of Education to obtain tenure…". That statement provokes some questions. What are the "standards of excellence"? Was Ms. McConnell aware of the standards by which she would …   more ›

Fishing Friday

Finally Time for Fluke!

Mild temperatures send anglers into action

There's no doubt I'm a bit late to the party this year. History holds that my boat is often one of the first in the marina and, almost always, the last boat to be hauled out. Jingle Bell Rock has played from the speakers mounted in my center console. But this year, my fishing season has yet to begin. I have a tentative appointment with my boat hauler in Barnegat to drop her in the water Monday, but that's after a spring where some busy work weeks here at Patch and marathon rounds of graduate school studying have pushed fishing to the back burner. Luckily, with formal graduation ceremonies at Monmouth University now complete, I'll continue a much more elusive educational endeavour: finding every last honey hole in Barnegat Bay! With the …

'Stangs Lose Tourney Nail-Biter to Jackson

Jackson Jaguars ace Brandon Holup blanks Brick Memorial Mustangs 1-0 in OCT.

Any sports fan would have appreciated the boys’ baseball Ocean County Tournament finale between (6) Brick Memorial and (1) Jackson Memorial Thursday night. Before a noisy crowd at Toms River High School North, Jackson’s 6’7” senior ace Brandon Holup and the Jaguars blanked the opposing Mustangs, 1-0.  It was a pitchers' duel from the start, as Brick Memorial also had an ace on the mound in Brian Cottrell (6-0). After Holup struck out two Mustangs in a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, Jackson scored the only run of the game in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI groundout by junior Spencer Young that plated senior Nick Petrizzo. That was all the offense Holup would need, as he carried a one-hitter into the fifth inning, where he would …
