Brick Students Volunteer Through the Summer

Students' effort help the 'Jump Start' program

The volunteer effort of National Honor Society students from Brick Township High School, Veterans Memorial Middle School and Lake Riviera Middle School have paid off in the form of 150 backpacks prepared for the 2012 Jump Start summer program.

Jump Start is a program paid for with federal funds which is offered to students going into grades 2 through 8 who received basic skills instruction. The program is aimed at providing students with a "jump start" on the next year’s academic requirements by providing grade level specific, student-centered activities in the areas of language arts and math during the summer, according to district spokeswoman Dina Silvestri.

Each student participating in the program, which begins July 30, receives school supplies and a language arts story book specific to their grade. The student volunteers helped prepare the backpacks for the incoming students.

nice that the kids are doing something good, By why limit it to the natl. honor students? Think that kids that are not honor students sometimes have better life/steet skills then honor students ( not always.. but usally)
Those are the kids you want working volunteering... Need to get these Children ready for Skilled jobs,,, not so much college anymore ( & lets be honest most of these Honor students are doing it bcz their parents told them that colleges love seeing that stuff)

Members from the BMHS Key Club have been participating in the Jump Start program for several years. We've put together backpacks and our students have been teacher aides. We weren't asked to participate this year, but we certainly would have. The Key Club is a service organization open to all students.

I would be asking the question why , where you not ask? & as above comment why is is limit to just a few students..? maybe get volunteer programs ( manatory if your lower then a C average) to maybe work on the HS, Sure they can not fix all the problems, But They can put a coat a paint up, simple landscaping, take town rotten wood & but up clean sheetrock, maybe even more skilled kids can do small plumbing work ( since the batheroom sinks do not usally work) they can re-place the / or fix the bleachers etc...( think of all the $$ the school would save too) many children NEED something constructive to do during the summer, this will put some pride in the HS & for students who may NOT being going to college & are more on the road of Vo-tech students teach them what the work is really like... I have 3 teenagers 1 special needs student & would be the 1st in line if there was a program like this... & as far as libility.. PLEASE, I also have a son that plays football ( would be GREAT for some school labor work) & has been playing since he's 7 its not anyworse then any hit he took during football...

Just a short thought to get the word out quickly about anything in your neighborhood.
Share something with your neighbors. Write a new post... What's up? Make an announcement, speak your mind, or sell something

I agree with quiet time. Def consideration of my neighbors if they have a sleeping baby or back yardRead More party. We surely try to respect that.

Funny Lelenore, I don't see that there are very many rules and regs. If it were elected it would notRead More be an infringement. I respect your opinion, but still feel six day time hours out of an entire week is not a lot to ask. If nothing else, would love to see a ban on gas leaf blowers. There are towns that have that in place. The mowers are not really IMHO that intrusive, but the leaf blowers and concrete cutters are another matter. Trouble is, people herebouts think they are in Montana and often are as you say, on 100 by 100 lots. What is the point of having all of this grass and trees if one never has the serenity about them to enjoy it? I think the ill effects of suburban noise pollution on health - blood pressure, aggression, release of the chemical cortisol etc. are well documented. Over a twenty five year period in time in Brick I find that this has become a real quality of life issue. At one point in my life I resided in mid town Manhattan and ya know what - being high up IT WAS QUIETER! Jackson? I don't think so. Doesn't Brielle have such an elective ordinance?

It was suppose to move next to the next liquor store behind Harbor Freight on Hooper. But,they neverRead More did.And when we pass it,it looks like they aren't even working on that side of the building. We miss that place for their deli dept.

They are waiting for the new store to get dirty and smell. It needs to be run down a little bit forRead More it to function properly.
can't say who June 19, 2013 at 05:44 pm
Right next to the liquor store. The reason it is taking so long is the politics of Acropolis andRead More Pat Botazzi. They kept the liquor store from opening for TWO years by controlling the planning board and caused the store owner HUNDREDS OF THOUSANS OF DOLLARES WITH COURT FIGHTS. Acropolis LOST THE COURT FIGHTS BUT CONTINUES TO BEAT UP ON THE LIQUOR STORE'S NEW TENNANT AS RETROBUTION Now Acropolis can play the code enforcement game and still get his happiness as a bigoted soon to be ex mayor and not a nice man. How about denying this. It is going to be a great store with the same owners and great food IF Acropolis doesn't have them go bankrupt due to him before they even open.
