Brick's Relay for Life Set for Saturday

Organizers hope to reach goal of raising $1 million this year

The township's annual Relay for Life event is set for this Saturday, organizers said this week.

Hundreds of participants are expected to come together at Windward Beach Park on Princeton Avenue to "honor cancer survivors, their caregivers and pay tribute to those for whom the cure did not come soon enough," said John Salemi, one of the event's organizers.

Relay for Life events are held in towns across America each year. The event is an overnight celebration where people take turns walking, running or otherwise circling around a track "relay" style to raise funds to fight cancer.

At nightfall, a luminaria is held to honor those who have died of cancer as well as survivors, Salemi said.

Since 1985, Relay for Life has expanded to 48,000 municipalities in the U.S. and cities in 25 countries.
