Council Approves Move to Seek Bids on Bayside Park Bulkheading

Maximum expense of $600,000 set for bids on project to repair failing bulkhead at barrier island park

The bulkhead and boardwalk at Bayside Beach in the Normandy Beach section of town will soon be replaced, after the Brick Township Council approved a resolution to seek bids on the project Tuesday night.

The project, estimated to cost $600,000 is long overdue in the eyes of the residents, who expressed dismay that the park has had limited usefulness since playground equipment was removed several months ago.

"That's the only public park on the bay for the residents of Brick," one resident said, noting that it's been "a whole year" since blockades were put up around the north end of the boardwalk to warn people to stay off it.

The boardwalk and bulkhead will be replaced with vinyl material this time, after the previous bulkheading of wood deteriorated too quickly, township Business Administrator Scott Pezarras said.

"We should have gone with the vinyl last time," he said.

The contract covers 600 feet along the edge of the park, and will be joined with the bulkheading on either end.

Once the bulkheading is done, Pezarras said, new playground equipment will be installed, replacing equipment that was removed because it was in serious disrepair.

Pezarras said the playground equipment had been inspected by a risk management investigator, who found rusted and deteriorating supports and more.

New custom-made equipment has been ordered and will be installed at the park after the bulkheading is completed, Pezarras said.

Why doesn't the mayor put up a sign and direct them to traders cove. He could setup an admission booth and charge them $10 to use the other bay side park.

Anybody know what the average lifetime of a bulkhead is? When the last one was installed and at what cost?

Now that tax $$$$ is being spent for recreation one would think that a complement is forthcoming. You complainers never had it so good while living here in Brick, (THE JEWEL OF SOUTH JERSEY) You moved outt'a Hoboken, Camden and Newark and now you complain about this wonderful township.............you amaze me to the point of almost telling you to move on. OK, I will say it. MOVE ON IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT HERE. PUT AN EGG IN YOUR SHOE AND BEAT IT. Open up this town so others who want to live here can buy your property and live a good healthy life. Don't look for me to move....................I love it here. How many of you agree with me? Don't be bashful , you can use a fake handle like those who don't want their names printed because of being ridiculed by your neighbors. Stand up and be counted, like a real man.

I don't live on the barrier island and I would hate to think what we would pay in taxes without them, probably double. So if they want a bulkhead repaired I say great and what took so long. What would the Town pay in damages if, God forbid, someone fell through the broken area and got hurt. Also this is an area that we all can enjoy.
