This Week in Brick Sports: Spring is in the Air

Spring sports kick off for Brick schools

If not for the calendar, you might not realize it was spring.

That, and the fact that you might drive past Brick American Baseball League and catch a Brick Memorial baseball game, or even the Drum Point Complex to witness a Brick lacrosse match-up, of course.

As the opening week of spring sports come to an end, let's take a look to see how it fared.

Mustangs

After an opening-day rain-out, Brick Memorial's baseball team was forced to open at home against Toms River South -- a state-wide powerhouse. The 'Stangs hung with the Indians for five innings, but were unable to hold up in a 10-2 loss. Memorial would respond nicely however, with a 5-0 home win over Toms River East with a terrific complete game from Kevin Nilsen and a 3-0 road win against Pinelands Regional, with Mike Nebesne pitching six shutout innings.

The Mustangs lacrosse team went winless in their opening week. After a 16-8 loss against Wall in their opener, Memorial fell in a thriller to rival Brick Township, 11-10. Ryan Porter scored four goals and had two assists for Memorial, a squad still in search of its first victory.

Dragons

The Dragons baseball team whomped Central Regional on opening day, winning 9-1, but fell to Lacey 7-3 later in the week as they stand at 1-1. The Dragons will be busy this week, playing four games and finishing off against rival Jackson Memorial.

After early cancellations, the Dragons played their first game of the year against rival Brick Memorial. Despite trailing by three with four minutes remaining, freshman David Kearns buried the game-winning goal with three seconds remaining as the Dragons took the win. On Saturday afternoon, Brick fell to Colts Neck 14-4 to fall to 1-1.

The Look-Ahead

This week, the Mustangs will be busy early as they will travel to Jackson Memorial on the diamond for a 3:45 p.m. game Monday.

For Brick,  they will take on Shore-conference favorite Jackson Memorial in lacrosse on the road on Thursday, April 14.
