This Week in Brick Sports: Both Hockey Teams Emerge Victorious

Mustangs and Dragons finish week 1-1, both basketball teams prepare for opener.

Too bad the Brick Memorial Mustangs and Brick Township Dragons had to play each other earlier this week.

Otherwise, the Mustangs could be looking at an undefeated start, had it not been for the exciting game that took place to open both schools' hockey seasons in 2010 at Ocean Ice Palace

Brick defeated the Mustangs in a thrilling 2-1 win that featured a late goal from freshman David Kearns, while the Mustangs earned their first win of the season in a 6-0 win against the Monsignor Donovan Griffins on Friday night in Toms River.

Old Brick, which is ranked 16th in the state according to njpowerranking.com, fell 5-1 to CBA on Wednesday afternoon in Wall in a chippy game where players had to be seperated during the second intermission.

Nick Spinelli was the star in the Mustangs win over MonDon, recording a hat trick while goalie Kevin Talty made 15 saves for the shutout.

Defensemen Patrick Kearns scored twice this week. He gave the Dragons the 1-0 lead against the Mustangs on Sunday evening, while tallying the lone goal against the Colts. Kearns has proved to be leader, defensivley, as well, much like the Mustangs captain, Jayson Francesini.

In the coming week, both schools will open their basketball seasons. On Friday, Dec. 17, the Mustangs will hope to defeat Middletown South when they come to Brick Memorial as the Dragons hardcourt team will travel to Mater Dei for their season opener.

As the hockey teams already proved in their first week of play, the winter sports will sure to melt the snow as the action starts to heat up.
