Dragons, Mustangs Enter Conference Tournament

Both schools prepare for Handchen Cup

Brick and Brick Memorial have accomplished their goals – literally.

Both teams have qualified for the state ice hockey playoffs and will compete for the Handchen Cup begining this week.

In a tournament between the top four teams in Shore A and the top four teams in Shore B, the Dragons were awarded the top seed while the Mustangs, who squeaked into the field, will be the sixth seed.

After starting the season 2-1-1, the Dragons have reeled off a 16-game winning streak, making them arguably the hottest team in the state playoffs.

On Sunday, Feb. 20, at 9 p.m., the Mustangs will hit the road, travelling to Toms River to take on the defending state champions. In their only match-up against each other this season, Toms River South was able to hold off the Mustangs for a 3-1 win at home.

Brick Memorial will look to be the surprise team of the tournament as it  finished the season 5-1-4 to qualify for both the Handchen Cup and state playoffs.

Both teams could meet up in the second round for a third time this season -- something everyone in Brick would like to see.
