Brick Township Lacrosse Team Looks to Take Next Step

Dragons hope to improve on their 2010 campaign after finishing 9-9 last year.

After finishing the regular season at 9-7 last year, Brick Township High School  lost a Shore Conference Tournament game and an NJSIAA Group III playoff game to end its season. This year, boys lacrosse coach Dan Rosa has other ideas for the Dragons.

"The goal this year, as always, is to qualify for the Shore and state playoffs," Rosa said. "This year we are expecting to win a few games once we get there."

For the Dragons to realize those expectations, they will rely upon the strong nucleus of the team to carry themselves through the season."Coming together as a team, unifying, gelling together will be the biggest key for us," Rosa said.

Anchoring a solid defense is junior Brian Murphy, who will be flanked by Justin Sieburt and Tom Francese. Senior Kevin Bogert leads an athletic group of midfielders and will be supported by James Egleston and Brendan Dowd.

On the offensive side, Mark Bixenman and Patrick Barrow will be joined by freshman David Kearns, whose impact could go a long way in sparking the Dragons' success.

Minding the net for the Dragons will be Joe Hardaker and John Kirk III.With only three seniors, Brick will be counting on many of the newer Dragons to step in and play efficiently. The team is hoping to start fast and never look back, the coach said.

"First game of the year," replied Rosa, when asked if any games in particular stand out to him. "The opener can really set the stage for a year and instill confidence in our squad."

When, exactly, they will get started is not known for sure just yet. Brick was originally scheduled to take on Barnegat, but that game has been postponed. The Dragons play again Friday, April 7, at Brick Memorial.

Brick was 2-0 vs. its crosstown rival last year, including an overtime victory.
