Brick Hockey Teams on Postseason's Doorstep

Both hockey teams push toward Handchen Cup and state playoffs

No one has to tell the ice hockey teams in Brick that the playoffs are right around the corner.

As Brick puts their 13-game win streak on the line this week, taking on CBA -- the product of their only loss this year -- Brick Memorial is starting to impress as it tries to qualify for states.

Here's a rundown of Brick Township sports this week:

Mustangs

After a shaky start to the season, Brick Memorial's team is beginning to play well when it needs to on the ice. The Mustangs tied their last three games, which included a 1-1  game versus Middletown North.  Memorial also had 1-1 ties against higher-ranked opponents on the road, namely Red Bank Catholic and Ridge.

The Mustangs are 6-8-3 on the season and must finish .500 to qualify for the postseason. They are currently the first team out of state playoff contention.

In boys basketball, it remains a struggle for the Mustangs. Losing at home to Pinelands Reigonal, 72-67, the Mustangs dropped their fourth straight game as they fell under .500 to 6-7 after starting 6-3.

Dragons

Brick easily dismantled Monsignor Donovan 6-0, in their only game of the week, improving their already stellar 15-1-1 record this season. The 10th-ranked Dragons will put their 13 game win streak on the line this week, hosting CBA on Thursday, Feb 10, at Ocean Ice Palace. The Colts handed the Dragons their only loss this season, 5-1, at Wall.

Things are starting to improve for the Dragons boys basketball squad. After a season that included blowout losses and even a scoreless quarter, the Dragons put up two wins over the past week. On Sunday, they scratched out a win against Jackson Liberty, and on Friday, they were able to pull out the win in double overtime against Ocean Township.

What to Watch

For Brick fans, the Brick versus CBA hockey game on Thursday is a must-see.

As for the Mustangs, fans are hopeful that the hockey team can pull out the win against Middletown South on Monday in a game that would certainly turn some heads. On Tuesday, the basketball team will hit the road to take on Toms River North.
