'Stangs Will Face Tough Road to Title in 2011

Brick Memorial set to take on Brick in season opener

In an attempt to reach the Central Jersey Group IV state final game for a fourth consecutive season, the Mustangs will have a tough road in 2011.

After battling cross-town rival Brick Township, who will be revamped with new head coach Robert Dahl on opening night, Brick Memorial will come back with home games against Jackson Memorial and Toms River East – teams which have had down years as of late.

Later, after a Saturday afternoon game on the road at Southern Regional, head coach Walter Currie's squad will be home to take on rival Toms River South.

In the latter part of the season, the 'Stangs will take on Middletown South at home, followed by Toms River North on the road – a squad that seems to always contend for a potential state title.

Then, Memorial will travel to Manalapan to take on the Braves, a year after they had an improbable run through the playoffs with a offensivley-loaded team.

Of course, it would not be Brick Memorial football without their annual date with the Howell Rebels. After the Mustangs knocked Howell out of the playoffs in 2009, the Rebels returned the favor with a big win last season, sending them into the playoffs.

This year, Brick Memorial will host the rival Rebels.

Brick Memorial will look to replace quarterback Mike Digluimi, who led the Mustangs to the state championship game the last two years.

In 2010, Brick Memorial fell to East Brunswick, 9-0, in a game in the snow, followed by falling to Sayreville, last season, 14-0.

The Mustangs toppled Sayreville in 2008, 24-0, when they won their second state title in school history.
