Search for New Brick Schools Super Starts Tonight

Walter Hrycenko's contract will not be renewed

With Brick's Board of Education having decided that Superintendent Walter Hrycenko's contract will not be renewed when it is up at the end of the 2011-12 school year, the search for a new schools chief is on.

The first step of that search will begin at Thursday evening's Board of Education meeting, when a representative from the New Jersey School Boards Association will be on hand to explain to board members, the public and anyone else exactly how the process of selecting a new superintendent works

Board President Sharon Kight said Wednesday that the presentation is what the SBA calls a "promo," which includes "an introduction for the public, staff and anyone who is interested in having input into the criteria being developed for our new superintendent."

Kight said she is encouraging as many members of the public as possible to come to the meeting.

In May, the school board renewing Hrycenko's contract for the superintendent position. Hrycenko will retain the superintendent's spot for the 2011-12 school year, after which he can return to assistant superintendent, his last tenured position. In that case, Assistant Superintendent Patricia Lorusso could be bumped back to her last tenured position as school principal.

Thursday's board meeting will be held at at 7 p.m.

Correction: This article has been updated to reflect that Assistant Superintendent Patricia Lorusso may be "bumped" back to her tenured position of principal if Superintendent Walter Hrycenko remains in the district after his contract expires. It previously implied that Lorusso's contract as assistant superintendent was not renewed.
