Rutgers Looks to President Obama For 2016 Commencement Speech

The ceremony marks the college's 250th anniversary.

Rutgers University wants to celebrate its 250th anniversary in style.

The University received support from Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez and Democratic Congressman Frank Pallone in extending an invitation to President Barack Obama to speak at Rutgers' 250th anniversary graduation ceremony in 2016, nj.com reports.

Menendez and Pallone sell Rutgers' enrollment of 65,000 full-time students and 25,000 member faculty to the president in the letter sent out on Monday, according to the report.

They also emphasize Rutgers' rich heritage, including the fact that it was founded 10 years before America became a country, according to the report. Rutgers was founded as Queens College on Nov. 10, 1766, under the royal charter of George III.

Obama's current term as president expires in 2016, and Gov. Chris Christie has widely been mentioned as a potential Republican candidate in that year's election.
