Mustang Roundup: Wrestling Team Rolls into SCT

A roundup of Brick Memorial High School sports

The wrestling team has continued its usual tradition of taking on tough competition, and rolls into the Shore Conference Tournament this week as the fourth seed. The Mustangs, who have three losses, are coming off a quad meet on Jan. 14 where they wrestled Raritan, Long Branch and CBA, all of which are ranked in the Shore Conference Top 10 on the wrestling site theshoreconference.com

The Mustangs defeated Raritan 36-19 and Long Branch 27-26, but fell to CBA 33-28 in a quad meet. Nick Costa beat Alberto Plaza in double overtime at 170, then Tyler Richardson’s second-period pin at 182 gave Brick Memorial the one-point victory.

Brick Memorial, which notched easier victories over Toms River North and Monmouth during the week, battled St. Peter’s Prep to the final bout on Sunday for a 29-28 victory. Bonus points were critical, with the Mustangs getting pins from Joe Ghione at 113 and Cliff Ruggiero at 138, and major decisions from Alec Donovan and Anthony Miller. It was Miller’s 12-4 major decision over Armond Cox at 195, the final bout, that sealed the victory for the Mustangs.

On Thursday at 5 p.m., Brick Memorial, which is one of the host sites in the Round of 16, will face Freehold Township, while Toms River South takes on Jackson Liberty. The winners of those two matches will face off at 7 p.m.

In boys basketball: The Mustangs (5-7) have had an up-and-down season, with victories sandwiched around losses. After beating crosstown rival Brick on Jan. 17, the Mustangs fell to Jackson Memorial on Friday, 48-30, and lost a hard-fought game at the buzzer to Toms River South, 55-54, on Tuesday. The Mustangs have a rematch with Southern, which it lost to by just two points in the teams' last meeting, and a game against Toms River East.

In girls basketball: Brick Memorial's girls have struggled of late, losing five of their last six games. As they've started their second set of divisional games, Toms River South avenged an earlier loss, beating the Mustangs 52-44 on Tuesday.

In ice hockey: Led by Adam and Tyler Person, the Mustangs have skated to a  5-7-1 record with the season just about halfway through, including a 3-3 tie with Middletown North on Jan. 15. The Mustangs lost 5-0 to Red Bank Catholic on Sunday.

In swimming: Zach Milko took first in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 50 freestyle for the Mustangs at the Ocean County Championships at the Ocean County YMCA. Peter Kellner was second in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and swam the lead leg of the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay, as the Mustangs took third place in both. Albert Yocius was seventh and Andrew Richards eighth in the 100 freestyle. The girls were not as fortunate, with not even a top 10 finish in any event.
