Brick Schools Return Today As District Reaches Out to Displaced Students

Brick Township students will return to school Monday after two weeks off thanks to Hurricane Sandy.

All schools will start their day at the normal time, officials said.

But some students will be far away from their usual bus stops. Many students in the township's Shore Acres, Baywood, Cherry Quay and – most notably – the barrier island neighborhoods have been displaced from their homes and, as a consequence, their schools.

But school district officials have pledged to rectify the situation and, to the extent they can, keep Brick Township students in Brick Township schools while they may be staying in other local communities temporarily.

Superintendent Dr. Walter Uszenski made the pledge last week, and has followed up by asking those whose families have been displaced by the storm to contact his office at 732-785-3000, ext. 1019.

The Board of Education is prepared to set up and provide transportation for those students who have been displaced and are residing locally in neighboring towns, the district has announced.

Uszenski is also advising any students or parents that are residing or seeking shelter in another district to contact that district's superintendent. A list of superintendents can be found on a state website.
