Brick Schools Open For Class Today

With Labor Day weekend only a memory, it's time to trade in bathing suits and boogie boards for books and binders. Brick schools open their doors to students for the 2012-13 school year Wednesday.

Students in all of the township's schools return to class today.

The school year begins with a new superintendent, Dr. Walter Uszenski, at the helm of the district. The Brick resident was hired over the summer; he previously led the Spotswood school district in Middlesex County.

"I believe there is no higher calling in America than the education, care and well-being of our young people, and the reason is clear," Uszenski wrote in a letter to parents over the summer. "Our youth will determine the quality and character of future generations. In my opinion, to be truly successful, education must be a partnership between schools, parents, students and the community at large."

Students will also see some sprucing up has been done over the summer. There are new bleachers at the football field at Brick Township High School and a new track at Brick Memorial. A gym has been updated at Memorial, while Old Brick will benefit from a new locker room, as well as significant upgrades to the school's science labs, much of which are expected to be completed next month.
