BOE Budget to be Presented Tonight

Above-cap spending plan won't be introduced, however

The Brick school district's administration will present its 2012-13 school year budget proposal to the Board of Education Wednesday night.

According to documents outlining the meeting's agenda, the administration will propose a $145,546,480 school budget, $99,543,260 of which will be funded by local taxpayers through property taxes.

That figure would put the district's budget about 7 percent over last year's $136 million spending plan, which would exceed the state's 2 percent expenditure cap.

The budget presentation is only the first step in the overall budgeting process, however, and represents the administration's initial proposal. The Board of Education has the power to reduce or increase the budget as they please before adopting a final spending plan.

If the final adopted budget includes a tax levy that exceeds the cap, a referendum will be held as in past years. If the board whittles down the budget and adopts a tax levy that stays within the cap, there will be no public vote.

The presentation will take place at the Board of Education's work session meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. at .
