Apology Over BTHS National Anthem Flap

BTHS principal apologizes at school board meeting

Brick Township High School Principal Dennis Filippone offered an apology at Thursday night's Board of Education meeting over the lack of the singing of the National Anthem at last Friday's football game.

"I'd like to publicly apologize to everyone who was offended," Filippone told those in attendance, after Board President Sharon Kight called him up to the microphone near the start of the meeting.

"I'm not going to make any excuses for it," he said. "It was not intentional."

Filippone said the school had specifically arranged for a singer to come to the game and perform the Star-Spangled Banner, especially since the game fell two days before the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, but there was "a bit of a shake-up up in the booth, and we missed an opportunity to do something really good."

"I can promise you, it will not happen again," the principal said.

The game, between the Brick Memorial Mustangs and Brick Dragons, opened up the football seasons for both teams. The Mustangs 17-10.
