Unique Playground Planned for Windward Beach Park

Community will have the opportunity to help build out new playground

Brick Township will be home to one of the most unique playgrounds in the country after the addition of new equipment at Windward Beach Park.

The township council has awarded a $17,772 contract to BCI Burke of Fond du Lac, Wis., to build the facility, which will be specifically constructed to allow both disabled and typical children to play in a single space.

The township received a $9,000 grant last year to build the playground, which is part of an overall rehabilitation of the playground area at the popular park.

"We had some aging structures that was removed last year, and they are going to be replaced with new [equipment]," said Councilwoman Andrea Zapcic.

The new playground equipment, Zapcic said, will be "100 percent accessible and simultaneously 100 percent inclusive, meaning that all children, regardless of ability, will be able to play together and enjoy the equipment."

The grant funding that has allowed for the one-of-a-kind playground equipment to be purchased came with a unique hitch – the requirement for a "community build day," where township residents can volunteer to build the playground together.

"Once we have the equipment, the safety surface, all the pieces of the puzzle in place, we will schedule a day when members of the community can come out, volunteer their time  to help us assemble the equipment and build out the playground under the supervision of a certified playground installation company," Zapcic said.

The township will announce the "build day" date when the equipment arrives in town, officials said.
