Taxi, Peddling Ordinances May Be Tweaked

Changes to both laws up for a vote next week

The township council may tweak two ordinances to clarify their language.

Up on first reading at the Feb. 28 council meeting is a measure to allow Brick residents to park a taxi or limousine at their residences.

Under the ordinance, the operation of a taxi or limousine business will be considered a permitted use under the township's "home office" law, provided only a single vehicle is parked off-street in an "improved parking space."

Taxicabs and limousines will not be permitted to park on the street in residential areas.

The council, on second reading, is set to consider a measure that would clarify language in the township's mobile food vendor ordinance.

Mobile food vendors – those who opeate hot dog carts, for example – must obtain from the township one of two license types available in order to set up shop in town. The so-called "class one" license entitles a vendor to set up in a single location for no more than two hours at a time, while the "class two" license allows a vendor to operate for 12 hours at a time.

The township now only distributes class one licenses, but the language in the ordinance was unclear, Council President John Ducey has said.

There was no delineation in the ordinance that defined what constituted remaining the same space for the purposes of enforcement. The revision to be voted on by council members will require that food vendors move at least 200 feet from their original location to be considered to be occupying a new space.

The council is set to vote on the measure after a public hearing at the Feb. 28 meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m. in the township .
