Scaturro Gets Hometown Endorsements for Assembly Run

Acropolis, DeLuca endorse fellow member of Brick's governing body

Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis and Brick Township Council President Brian DeLuca, both Republicans, have both announced their endorsement of Brick Councilwoman Ruthanne Scaturro in what may shape up to become a contested Republican primary campaign for state Assembly.

Scaturro she would run to replace James Holzapfel in the state Assembly post for the 10th legislative district. Holzapfel is running for state Senate, replacing longtime Sen. Andrew Ciesla, who announced his retirement Feb. 10.

Scaturro faces competition for the Republican nomination from Toms River Council President Gregory P. McGuckin. Party officials are slated to conduct screenings of the two candidates over the next few weeks in hopes of avoiding a primary battle featuring council members from the GOP-heavy 10th legislative district’s two largest communities.

“I have been very fortunate to have worked alongside of Ruthanne for the past four years,” DeLuca said. “She has been my mentor and adviser as I learned about how government operates.”

DeLuca also said Scaturro, coming from a municipal government background, would help the interests of local communities if she were to be elected to a state post.

Acropolis, in his endorsement, called Scaturro a valuable partner during his tenure on Brick’s governing body and in his mayoral position.

“I have counted on her for advice and looked to her because of her ability to logically, and with common sense, effectively resolve issues that affect our township residents,” Acropolis said. “I want her to bring that ability and effectiveness to all the residents in the 10th district.”

Scaturro and McGucking have both served on their respective township governing bodies since 2003.

The 10th legislative district includes the municipalities of Brick, Toms River, Point Pleasant Borough, Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Mantoloking, Lavallette, Island Heights, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park and South Toms River in Ocean County, and Manasquan in Monmouth County.
