Route 70 to Get Extra Travel Lane, Repaving in Brick

Shoulder will be converted to third lane

Brick Township officials have approved a plan to partner with the state on a project that will improve traffic flow in the eastbound lanes of Route 70 near the Chambers Bridge Road intersection.

The township council recently approved a $447,316 contract with Black Rock Enterprises, of Old Bridge, to perform the work. Of that amount, the state will pay $272,297 through grant funding, with additional grant funding possible in the future, said Council President Susan Lydecker.

Under the project, which is part of a number of joint efforts the township has committed to since 2003 to improve traffic flow on the highway, the existing shoulder between Chambers Bridge Road to the area near Forge Pond will be converted to a third eastbound travel lane including full depth pavement reconstruction of the shoulder area.

The project also calls for the milling and resurfacing of the existing travel lanes.

The township council awarded the contract after it had been rebid, Business Administrator Joanne Bergin said, because township officials felt the roadwork should be completed exclusively during the nighttime hours. An original plan called for work to be completed during the day.

"Thankfully, we don’t have to pay for about two-thirds of the project," Lydecker said.

Township Engineer Elissa Commins said the project is one of many the state and township have partnered on since traffic flow in the center of town became a priority nearly a decade ago. The project was funded under the 2012 capital budget.
