Obama Endorses Same-Sex Marriage: Do You?

President made historic pronouncement during ABC News interview

In a landmark statement, President Barack Obama has become the first president to state his support for same-sex marriage.

Obama gave the news to ABC News' Robin Roberts in an interview that will air on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday.

"I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told Roberts.

The news comes just days after Vice President Joe Biden said he supports gay marriage.

In New Jersey, same-sex marriage advocates are rejoicing.

"I am overwhelmed with tears of joy, as our millions of other LGBT people and our millions of allies across America,” said Garden State Equality's Chair Steven Goldstein. “We will remember for the rest of our lives where we were when we heard the sitting president of the United States say he supports marriage equality.

"Today’s announcement by the president is of particular importance to those of us fighting in New Jersey and everywhere else marriage equality is up for grabs. No longer will opponents such as Gov. Chris Christie be able to take cover by saying, 'Why are you going after me? My opposition to marriage equality is simply the same view as that of our President.' That political cover is now thrown into dustbin of history parked outside the archives of prejudice, collecting its rhetorical trash."

U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) praised Obama’s statement.

"President Obama's support for marriage equality marks an important moment for civil rights in America. We simply can not treat same-sex couples as second-class citizens in our country. Marriage equality is one of the most significant civil rights battles of our time and is critical to guaranteeing the equal protection under the law promised to every American in the Constitution. The President's support for marriage equality should inspire Congress, governors and state legislatures to advance civil rights for all Americans."

Last year, Lautenberg joined Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and others to introduce legislation that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.

The "Respect for Marriage Act” would repeal DOMA and restore the rights of all lawfully married couples – including tens of thousands of same-sex couples – to receive the benefits of marriage under federal law.

Undocumented? I provided you with the names of the researchers who proved this, but I'll go one step further, and do the Google search for you, as I'm not sure you have the brain capacity to remember names from one website to the next. Here you go;
http://www.google.com/search?q=buss+and+shackelford+infidelity+statistics&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari So where's your proof? Or are you just posting nonsense because you have no valid reason to deny civil rights to gays, only hatred, prejudice, and bigotry?

So what have I said thats foul mouth calling big ears a marists commie? Calling far leftwinger idiots?
Diogenes May 13, 2012 at 01:58 am
Care to define "liberalism" beyond the realm of everything that you don't like or agree with? It's so easy to try to categorize people and call them names; then you don't feel obligated to think or seek the truth inb an honest way.
Anthony May 13, 2012 at 02:28 am
Proud, do you honestly expect people to take you seriously when you type out whatever that jibberish you call a sentence is? Seriously, how do you re-read what you "write" and at the end think "Yeah! I'm gonna call them an idiot!" with a straight face? Do you just not know how to spell correctly? I mean, there's typos, and then there's that trash that leaves your keyboard. There's an old saying that goes "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt". Perhaps you should just stop removing all doubt, because not one intelligent sentence has left your brain yet.

Bottom line, Obama is just looking for votes to assure that he stays another 4 years. I believe that he could not care less...its just politics. One thing he sure did do is get people thinking and disagreeing and for voters to be against the Rep Party and Romney. It really doesn't matter (in this forum) how I feel, again its just a political move that we all should look past. I think even if Obama does get re-elected, it still comes down to a state by state vote. Don't let him fool you gay's out there...he just wants you in his pocket.
Anthony May 13, 2012 at 02:34 am
There's 300+ comments here that say Obama saying this and bringing it up brought attention to the plight of homosexuals not being treated equally, and created dialogue. I think he did more for same sex marriage by saying that than even HE knows he did.

Show me where anyone else - especially "eggsntoast" used any of the childish names, terms, or 'vulgarities' YOU've used over and over again, like: * commie * idiots * devil worshipper * LIEberal * liar * marxist * Leftist Lamestream media * socialist leftist commie * moron * Muslim 'killers or sympathizers' * calling the president "Obammie the Commie", or calling him "Hussain" * Calling non-Christians "atheists, godless, heathens, devil worshipers" etc I'm also confused as to why your posts are not deleted. The editors are surely slipping.

Why is everyone in such a heated debate over a statement made on gay marriage by the most effeminate president to ever hold office? Is anyone really suprised??
If Obama really had any guts at all, he'd just come out of the closet and join the rest of of his ilk. He's not fooling anyone.
Mattie May 13, 2012 at 05:54 pm

what are you -- in 5th grade?? LOL I think I'm going to 'throw in the towel' on this topic like eggsntoast did. There's no sense trying to talk to people who behave like middle school bullies - with the emotional outbursts and snotty language to match. Good luck everyone!

because boys and girls bigots like smart one mary, grumpass and part timer whine about their constitutional rights being taken away but God forbid someone has a common sense opposite opinion from then then its time to take the right of free speech away from that person. you see because for those like part timer. proud not to be liberal, grumpass and others the constitution was written only for them. and smart ton mary hopefully you didnt spawn and have offspring or we will have yet another generation of gay bashers and bullies to deal with. and part timer is typical of the rich white guy up on the hill who thinks whites are a minority . sad .people like these exist only in the fox bubble. any other source of news is all the "lefty media" even the patch according to these people. lol

Thank you CR the same bed bugs keep talking down all others on this subject, they call us all sorts of names trying to belittle us for our opinion regarding same sex marriage, I for one will never condone same sex marriage. CR thanks, have a great week!

lisa, comments like that just prove that ignorance will survive.
Anthony May 14, 2012 at 02:16 am
Wrong question..in fact, I didnt even ask a question about the comments, but thanks for the effort. Maybe tomorrow you can try tying your shoes and counting to ten. But right, only the people who arent hate filled bigots are posting. Nevermind that the combination of Proud2notb, Mrgrumpass, and Part Timer have contributed probably a quarter of those posts (not a witty remark or 3 braincells between them) on their own, while actually contributing nothing to the conversation but horribly constructed sentences and 3rd grade humor. While I may not have the best arguments or wittiest banter, its a far cry from their piss poor representation of the human race.

I am pretty sure Marriage is a religious sacrament and the Bible defines Marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Obviously, the sacrament of Marriage has been tarnished over the years. What is it? Somewhere in the neighborhood of 50% of Marriages end in divorce? However, IMO the term Marriage is a religious one and really doesn't pertain to same sex couples. Listen, I don't think most people really care if 2 gay people want to spend the rest of their lives together and even raise a family for that matter. The point is this union will not be recognized from a religious standpoint. I don't understand why the term civil union will not suffice? Otherwise, gay people should contemplate starting a new religion where same sex marriage is the standard.

Negative, Lisa. 42, well educated and even better compensated. One of thirteen corporate board members to ever gain a chair under the age of 50, in my corporation's 107 year history. Simple mindedness didn't gain me the view that I've got from my office. Still a TR guy though- through and through.

Lisa, one last thing just in case your wheels slowly started to grind...my office isn't located in Toms River- just a few miles north to this little place us simple minded folk call New Amsterdam, or FiDi if we're feeling a little bit giddy.
Oh, and good luck with the homosexual marriage thingy, we'll toast Obama when I gather with my colleagues for dinner at my beach house this weekend!
Anthony May 14, 2012 at 03:54 am
Its a shame all your money cant buy you some class and respect.
Anthony May 14, 2012 at 03:58 am
Marriage really isn't just about love and religion: it is also a contract recognized by the government. Civil unions are only recognized in the state in which they are performed. If you have a civil union in Vermont, it will not be recognized in a state like Arkansas, one that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
One of the major differences between civil unions and marriage is that folks who have a civil union do not have the benefits or perks of the marriage. Since a marriage is a legal contract that joins two people, it means that they can receive tax breaks like filing a joint return. However, a couple in a civil union does not receive such benefits. The lack of federal benefits can really make all the difference. For example, if a person's partner passes away, the other partner would not be able to take sick leave to care for their partner or receive survivor benefits through Social Security because the civil union is not looked upon in the same way as a marriage. Similarly, those with a civil union won't be able to place their partner on their health insurance but those who are married can. "Separate but equal" was a failed and pernicious policy with regard to race; it will be a failed and pernicious policy with regard to sexual orientation.

Pandering for the gay vote. If the guy thought that five Apache Indians were undecided, he'd show up in a Tonto costume. Pitiful. Bad news for him is that the blackest counties in NC were unbelieveably in favor of the marriage amendment.
That's not a good sampling of things to come for old Barry.
Spooner May 14, 2012 at 05:21 am
Yeah Obama is not looking to good in NC and Virginia, not to mention a story from a former Point Pleasant resident who now writes for the Pittsburgh Tribune saying the same for Ohio and Penn. . .An economic think tank out of NYC is predicting a recession this year. Their past track record is three for three. . .right on the money. Obama and his minions better get cracking? As for Romney. . .is there a third party in the house!
Mrgrumpass May 14, 2012 at 02:54 pm
Spooner the only real + for Romney is that he has a business background when he adds 2+2 it equals 4 when BHO adds 2+2 is seem to come out a in the minus area.
Spooner May 14, 2012 at 03:53 pm
Mrgrumpass: there both phonies...Obama with his change. . .and Romney, the Harvard Business educated flip-flopper! You have Romney who changes his song and dance routine to any way the wind happens to be blowing. . .and Obama. . . well we've seen what he's about? Please don't give me your partisan pleadings. . .I'm bored with them!

"Its a shame all your money cant buy you some class and respect"- Ant-nee
I wouldn't spend a red cent for your brand of "class". As for respect, gaining or presenting my own has no monetary value because it must be earned- something the progressive entitlement crowd has absolutely no concept of.

The definition of Bigot
Bigoted person ; especially: a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group You call me bigot when I only stated several times that I don’t agree you all seem to fit the definition fare better then I. If you go back to my first contribution here there was no hate in it. Read them before you point out hatred.

For the record I do not have a problem with a gay, black, female and bipolar president, I simply do not feel the current holder of the office if fit for the task and he has proven it time and time again. To pass / support unconstitutional laws that would force people to enter into commerce? To pass / support laws that will continue erode our freedoms? Wake up! I sure don't want another four years of what we have had the last four. My opinion is of the man's actions not has race, creed, color or religion. Frankly I am afraid of what he will try to break next, perhaps the internet? Oh wait he has and still is working on that one.
