Mayor to Ask Council Members to Reduce Salaries

Tuesday night meeting shaping up to be a show-down

Brick Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis will ask township council members to halve their salaries, eliminate health benefits and give up stipends for waiving health care benefits at Tuesday night's council meeting.

Council members are paid $8,000 for their services; the council president receives $9,000.

It was not immediately clear Tuesday afternoon which council members currently receive health benefits from the township.

For township council members who do not receive benefits, there is a $4,000 waiver incentive in place.

Acropolis said in an e-mail to Brick Patch that he will propose ordinances and resolutions at tonight's council meeting to cut the council salaries in half, and formally eliminate health care benefits and the health care waiver incentive for council members. He will also ask for the mayor's salary to be reduced to $1 from its current payout of $52,000. Acropolis said he does not take health benefits from the municipal government.

"The new council majority ran against higher taxes in Brick Township," Acropolis said in the e-mail. "It is time to follow through with their promises."

"We should lead by example which is why I pledged to take only $1 in compensation and why I already have waived taxpayer funded health care as Mayor," Acropolis said.

Council President John Ducey could not be immedately reached for comment.

The township council meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the township .

Acropolis is such a joke. I always said he was the worst mayor in brick history and he proves me right all the time. I would like to know how much he pay's Art Sholty to put him on a high pedestal. Oh has anyone noticed that the R's election trailer at foodtown is gone now. thought they had nothing to do with it. they waited a month to make it look good.

The bottom line is if its fulltime then keep hours on this clown.....Between Brick and Toms River this guys is making all of us look like clowns....He is stealing, and should be charged.....This clown would not be asking for a $1, if he didn't have Toms River.....The FBI will get to the bottom, and he will be at Fort Dix soon enough.....crook!!!

I hope Pres. Ducey goes over and sticks a Big cork in his mouth to shut him up once and for all. The mayor should just resign now, move out of Brick and let the rest of us forget about his awful tenure in office.

These employees and the positions mentioned above should be fired IMMEDIATELY and those positions eliminated permanently. I'm sure no one will miss them. Didn't the mayor's friend Patrick Doyle hold 1 of those positions before the fatal auto accident on Jordan Road?????????
disgusted homeowner January 04, 2012 at 03:15 AM
Just noticed this evening that the "trailer/billboard" for the Shoppes at the pond is gone. Does this mean no banquet hall is going up after all???? Just put the old foodtown back, all will be happy and the folks will be dancing in the streets!!!!! LOL

the mayor took a shot at the TC both D's & R's. I think we've just seen the last of party line voting in Brick for some time to come. the mayor just created a block of 6. while most seem to feel the mayor doesn't deserve a full time salary, I don't think they begrudge the TC theirs. especially if they work for what's best for all of Brick.

@Gary, that crime is called "STEALING TIME FROM THE EMPLOYER". Several former co-workers of mine years ago were prosecuted at a plant i worked at for just that. MMMMMMM......

I truly believe if a recall attempt was put forth against Acropolis, the town would again speak and we would be successful. He showed his character yet again by not showing up on Sunday when our new council members were sworn in. Now all he can do is stomp his feet like Herman Muenster... Darn, Darn, Darn... Steve, please, in the best interest of our town, just resign. You are doing an injustice to this town and the people who reside here.

Bully Scarpelli???? That's real funny. Former mayor Scarpelli was well known to be a bully in his own right, and the cost of crossing him was mighty high, so don't act like ole "Uncle Joe" was a poor little man sitting there being abused by the big bad council president.
Sam Foster January 04, 2012 at 04:16 AM
Mayor Acropolis did a lot of talking tonight about how he asked for a reduction of the mayors salary months ago. But what I wanted to ask was why didn't he speak about reducing the salary of the mayor to $1 before he accepted the $93k job at the Toms River MUA? Keep in mind this is the same mayor who said that the reason he was taking the job at the T.R. MUA was because he couldn't support his family on his $50k salary as mayor. I Can't wait until he is out of office.

no disgusted, elected officials that hold other employment typically either have an agreement with the employer or a contract that allows them time during the day to attend to the official functions of their elected position, and the agreement/contract allows them to work flex schedules (ex. going in early or staying late) to make up the time that they "owe" their full time employer. I am stating a fact so please lets not get into the full time mayor or the double dipping debate on this post that is not the intent of what i am trying to say. The majority of NJ Government positions, regardless of how you feel about them and the compensation and benefits given, are considered to be part time jobs, and those that hold them all have a business, some type of law or medical practice or another full time position either in the public or private sector.

Me: live broadcast sounds like a great idea. Especially now that they will be held weekly, I hope the meetings will be posted on B20 sooner than Thursdays. It will give anyone interested in the Township's goings on to view the meetings more frequently.
Concerned Brick Citizen January 04, 2012 at 06:14 PM
I think the Mayor's reasoning for requesting that Councils’ salaries and benefits be decreased is because the newbie members don’t appear to be as financially well off as the Mayor and existing Council members. He wants to hit them in their personal pocketbooks. This is a case where the rich get richer or remain rich and the "poorer" who may want to do to do something good for the Township and truly fight for the people really could use the better salary and benefits. – Greedy versus truly needy.
morrissey January 04, 2012 at 06:24 PM
of course he is........but they shouldnt have lied to get voted in......they will lose all respect in only 3 days.......that might be a record
Gina January 04, 2012 at 07:39 PM
Regarding Acropolis calling on the Council to reduce their salaries... A change to the Council's salaries is not comparable to changes in the Mayor's salary. The Mayor took the job as a full-time job at full-time pay of $52k. After becoming Mayor, he took ANOTHER full-time job. SO - the Mayor's salary should then be reduced to what it was as a part-time position: $15,000. Not a dollar, not zero. The Mayor trying to bully the Council into reducing their pay shows his weak leadership and has nothing to do with why he is being called upon to reduce his. If my boss is overpaid for his job and his salary is adjusted, why should he ask me to take a pay cut too if I have had the appropriate pay all along? Would it save the company money if everyone in the company reduced their pay? Of course, but this is about appropriate rates of pay. I don't ask my company to cut my hours in half and pay me the same and if they don't pay me the same to start cutting other people's pay when they still do what they did all along.

Betty the videos of all council meetings can be viewed on the Township Web Site as well when ever you want. I am not sure how soon they are available after the meeting though

Nobody had to lie to get voted in. The Democrats in Brick were dead(flatlined) since the Scarpelli days. The Town Council was all Republicans. All the jobs in town were given to Republicans. All I can say is the Republicans must have been pretty awful to get blown away by a bunch of "unworthy, unknown neophytes". I can certainly understand the bitterness of the losers. It has to be embarrassing to get your a$$es kicked by a bunch of unknowns. For people like John C, instead of acting like a baby why not round up the party faithful and start in a new direction? Stop all the attacks(the electorate is sick of that crap). That's why Obama is going to win re-election. The Karl Rove theory of slinging crap has run its course. Why not try finding something positive to build on?
Brick Citizen January 04, 2012 at 10:05 PM
I agree with Concerned Brick Citizen. The four Democrats may need the benefits or the extra salary. It's not for us to judge. We are not in there shoes for the next four years. They will be away from there families for long periods of time. That alone is worth something. Give them a chance to do the job that they were elected to do. The rich mayor is sitting pretty with us paying his benefits from his wife on Bricks dime. So he need not preach that we the people of Brick aren't paying his health care. For him to give up the mayor salary. He still is living LARGE from TRMUA.... Enough already with this petty stuff. We still were strong armed into 24%!!! Good Luck to the new Dems in council..Let's focus on the debt that Brick has. Instead of some small time health benefits. You people act like they hit the lottery!!! They have a lot of hard work ahead of them!!!!!!
Joseph Lamb January 04, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Maybe I don't understand. If the Acropolis Team was so financially well to do, why all the bankruptcys, tax liens and taking government jobs because no one in their industry wants them?
Betty Ann January 04, 2012 at 11:09 PM
@ John C: Thanks for the comment. I do know council meetings are on the Brick website as well as B20. My question was......since the new council announced that meetings will now be held weekly, WHEN will the videos be available. As of tonight, yesterday's meeting is still not up on B20 or the Brick website. So I guess that means we still have 5 days to hope we catch the council meeting at just the right time. Then those of us who have computers can watch the archived meetings on our PC's, unlike some of our elders in the town who don't.
Betty Ann January 04, 2012 at 11:12 PM
Zero, I don't agree with you either. Who am I to say what one's position is worth? I for one know of administrative assistants who make more than 60,000/yr.
morrissey January 05, 2012 at 12:25 AM
than they all should have said they plan of taking health benefits.......they didnt say that and now they cant take them !
Steve Barnes January 05, 2012 at 03:04 AM
They campaigned on not taking health benefits, basically accusing their opponents of milking the system, and now that they're in office, they're second-guessing their promise to not take the benefits. I think that's what people are upset about.
Denny D January 05, 2012 at 03:48 AM
The Republicans lost the election because they lost the trust of the voters and the vicious mailers. Stop twisting the 5000 dollar issue. The Mayor taking 52K per year and not showing up didn't help the Rs either. You guys should be pissed off. You got beaten badly by a bunch of nonames. Stop acting so tough and start using some diplomacy(if you have a clue what that means). The more meetings you go to and try to act like you are still in control the more voters you will lose. Give it up. You lost and it was YOUR OWN FAULT. Are you that idiotic not to realize that? Geez
Lori Morrison January 05, 2012 at 12:40 PM
The four new council members CHOSE to run for office to serve the people of Brick. If the main goal for them was to get free health benefits and an extra salary then they do not belong there. There are many people serving their community spending long hours away from their families that do not receive benefits or salaries, they do it because they care about their community. If what they receive is based on need, maybe I should run for council because my husbands health benefits suck and It would be nice to have a second income in the family! It is supposed to be about what you can give to others, not what you can get from them.
BW January 05, 2012 at 02:02 PM
All of coming down on the new members for not answering an making asumptions, you know what they say when you ASSUME. Under our form of govt, the Mayor has NO SAY at council meetings unless INVITED to speak. I do not blame them for not answering, the question was nothing more then GRANDSTANDING and CHILDISH BEHAVIOR on the part of Stevie.
Joseph Lamb January 05, 2012 at 06:06 PM
Bob, I don't see it that way. The 2011 budget showed a reduction in Miscellaneous Revenue of $7.6 million. This was due to using $4.4 million from the state refund for Traders Cove in 2010, tapping out the school deferral tax of $2.7 million in 2010 and selling a liquor license in 2010 for $500,000. The mayor has robbed Peter to pay Paul. This is his budget, no one elses. You can't add at least $22 million to debt and not feel the consequences. Believe me, this is a fight the new council and I want. The mayor will be digging himself a bigger hole. I can't wait for the mayor to detail the 24% decrease. How is that possible without rescinding all the pay raises he gave to political cronies? How is it possible to rescind at least $22 million of prior debt? How is it possible not to discuss the shortfall from 2010 that he, the council and the BA knew they were carrying into 2011. How is it possible to be paying your legal counsel more than twice what the previous counsel was paid and there are no financial repercussions? We're talking $1.728 million over 5 years.
morrissey January 05, 2012 at 06:11 PM
the BA is a liar......FIRE SCOTT PEZARRAS
Betty Ann January 05, 2012 at 11:01 PM
ok, it's now 6pm Thursday. Still no video on the Brick website of Tuesday's meeting. I hope it will be up by 7pm so I can see it on B20.

the mayor has been involved in local politics for way too long. too many friends of friends. Acropolis should either resign or stop acting like this is a game . He's not doing anything to make life better for us. He's saying ""oh, oh you embarassed me so now i'll show you how much power I have" School yard BS and meanwhile the duly elected council has to put up with this. Whats this business with him not allowing the former mayor to speak when he was council pres. In my 50 years of working for a living "full time" was 40 hrs/wk and 2 full time jobs was 80 hrs/wk Some how I dont think the mayor looks like he's banging out 80 a week. So who's he screwing?? Didnt the town of Brick ever invest in a time clock??? Does he account for his hours on either job?? And pls no BS about how he may have to go out in the middle of the night for an emergency. The last thing a firefighter, police officer, or medic needs is the mayor strutting around at 3am in the middle of an emergency. Mr Mayor pls stop going on tv and speaking to the people of Brick like we're all stupid children and your the Great Teacher. No more lectures on the form of government. Resign or accept the will of tthe people as expressed at the last election, learn some humility, lick your wounds and start doing your job. Or maybe just GO
